And here we are, with the first book that actually features the star of this series: Miles Vorkosigan.
In the preceding book, Barrayar, Cordelia Naismith is poisoned, and while she emerges unharmed, her unborn son Miles doesn't fare so well. He's small and deformed--and has brittle bones that constantly break. We find this out on page 1 when he shatters his legs trying to complete the physical requirements to get into the Barrayaran military academy.
