Old Man's War by John Scalzi follows in the tradition of such military science fiction novels as The Forever War, Ender's Game, and Starship Troopers. Needless to say, I went in with high expectations. While I wasn't disappointed, once the story got rolling it followed a fairly predictable pattern.
Scalzi is a prolific blogger with a twenty year publishing history behind him. Old Man's War was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2006. It is the first book in a series set in ...more

This was a very cool novel. I am not an aficionado of the sci-fi genre, or any genre for that matter, but I have not delved into this type of book for a while. Well after reading this intergalactic military adventure, I will be reading the rest of this series and others. This was fun. The characters where all likable, if not short lived, as this is war on a universal scale. John Perry, our main hero in this opening series is just another human like you or me who is at the tail end of his life wi

I love the stuff I've read from Scalzi so far. This one was no exception. I don't usually like military sci-fi. I find the genre to be colonialist and hyper-masculine and, well, militaristic. This book is sort of anti-all those things while dressed as a space marines type of tale. There are some thoughtful considerations throughout this book of all the questions that usually go unasked by others just like this: is there ever a chance for peace? What does it mean to colonize? Who is expendable an

I heard about Old Man’s War from a podcast and came in a little skeptical. I was pleasantly surprised. John Perry was a great main character. His inner monolog was funny and made it so I could connect with him and appreciate his adventures. The story world for Old Man’s War was also fun to get into. All of the alien cultures were well thought out and consistent. I haven’t read a lot of sci-fi over the last few years, but this book got me back into it. If you are looking for a book with a lot of

I really enjoyed this book. I think I enjoyed the first 150 pages more than the rest, though. It was fun, fast-paced and exciting. The last 150 was still fast-paced but lacked the personality that the main character brought in to the first half. But otherwise it was a very entertaining read, and I will definitely add the second book in the series: The Ghost Brigades to my 'To-Read' list!

The funnest and funniest book I've read all year. Simply amazing. The concept is awesome and I must say I love this book.
