I feel bad. I finished this book two days after we recorded the episode of Sword and Laser where we wrap it up (first time I haven't finished a book for the audio show). I blame Outlander for being too long.

Anyhow, I wish I had made it to the end, because coming away from the book now I feel much differently than I did at the 75% mark. If felt like the silliness that was almost a distraction for me came together in the end in a really beautiful and meaningful way.

This is my third time reading this book and every time I am astounded at its whit and charm.
Its incredibly well written with an engrossing plot and fabulous characters.

The story is narrated by Number Ten Ox who is on a quest to cure the kids in his village. He hires an ancient yet spry wise man called Li Kao who leads them on a hilarious adventure filled with magic, suspense, mirth, romance, a little bit of science, and lots of drinking.

Well worth the time.

This was a quest and a mystery that was wonderfully tied up at the end. A lot of fun, and a definit

I've been wanting to read this book for 25 years, and I'm glad I finally did. I wasn't sure it could live up to so much hype, but the ending really delivered. Hughart's writing is beautiful, touching, funny, and inspiring. A wonderful heroic epic, a real gem. ...more
