What Members Thought

I feel bad. I finished this book two days after we recorded the episode of Sword and Laser where we wrap it up (first time I haven't finished a book for the audio show). I blame Outlander for being too long.
Anyhow, I wish I had made it to the end, because coming away from the book now I feel much differently than I did at the 75% mark. If felt like the silliness that was almost a distraction for me came together in the end in a really beautiful and meaningful way.

This is my third time reading this book and every time I am astounded at its whit and charm.
Its incredibly well written with an engrossing plot and fabulous characters.
The story is narrated by Number Ten Ox who is on a quest to cure the kids in his village. He hires an ancient yet spry wise man called Li Kao who leads them on a hilarious adventure filled with magic, suspense, mirth, romance, a little bit of science, and lots of drinking.
Well worth the time.

This was a delightful read. It was beautifully description, lyrical but also gently humorous and witty. Poor Ten Ox goes from never having been away from his village to adventuring all over with Master Li, who has a slight flaw in his character. I just love that description and how whenever he does something a little less than kosher, he shrugs it off to that, and also introduces himself that way.

I've been wanting to read this book for 25 years, and I'm glad I finally did. I wasn't sure it could live up to so much hype, but the ending really delivered. Hughart's writing is beautiful, touching, funny, and inspiring. A wonderful heroic epic, a real gem.
