What Members Thought

I first read this book when I was in high school, back when dinosaurs walked the earth, people still thought digital watches were a pretty cool idea, and mobile phones were the size of a suitcase.
I enjoyed it at least as much this time. Humor is subjective, and I still find it bloody hilarious! If you don't enjoy Monty Python-esque British humor it may not be your cup of Earl Grey, but it still works for me! It had been a while since I'd read the Hitchhiker's Guide, but I had a couple of hours to kill at the DMV and found a copy in my glove box. It was all I remember.
I'm at a loss to explain Douglas Adams's particular genius, so I'm going to simply quote from near the end of this book, a passage that sets up the second book in the trilogy, The Restaurant at the end of the Universe:

This just isn't my book. It's not a bad book, but it's not one I enjoyed. The silliness annoyed me rather then amused me. There were parts I found somewhat amusing but nothing laugh out loud funny, and those parts were few and far between. I've read it, can't say I enjoyed it all that much.

Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy made for a fun and quirky read, and it was certainly better than the movie. I was able to run through the novel in only two days as it was engaging and and easy read. Do not however confuse and easy read with simple or lacking in depth. Unfortunately, I think it was somewhat over-hyped by everyone who recommend it to me. Had I stumbled upon it on my own or at a younger age, perhaps I would have been more enthused. That being said, I will probab

This should be 3.5 stars. Having read (listened to) Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency #1, I was prepared for Douglas Adams's style. However, this didn't blow me away the way I thought it would. I think it is another book that has been so hyped for so long that it couldn't help but disappoint. I was also disappointed in the abrupt ending - but again, I expect it from Adams. I will have to read the entire series to get the full story.
