What Members Thought

I made my thoughts pretty clear about this book in the most recent episode of Sword and Laser!

Good if you are familiar with Chicago or are interested in Chicago and its history. This elevated the book to three stars for me. I loved seeing the city I knew ca. 1993, and I loved the historical vignettes, each of which focused on a talented or trailblazing woman anytime from 1930s to 1980s. Even though the historical women only had a few pages each, their characters felt more fleshed out than Kirby, our primary protagonist. Same goes for Dan.

I enjoyed this book but didn't love it. A killer who is able to hop through time finding Shining Girls and killing them in a brutal fashion. One victim survives and tries to investigate and find her attempted killer. This novel had some great, disturbing writing. I was a little frustrated that it never explains why the killer kills nor how the time travel it works. Otherwise a ok book for those you like serial killers and time travel.

I'm glad I didn't lose faith in Lauren Beukes. Moxyland, the other book of hers I've read, had so much potential but fell so short. Shining Girls was an exciting and completely engrossing page turner ... the only gripe I had was that she got her directions wrong on the El. A minor gripe, but then again, I take the El everyday.
