There really aren't any descriptions that can do justice to Bitter Seeds. It's quite different than any book I've ever read. It's set in an alternate WWII where the Germans have started training children to use superpowers shortly after WWI, and the English are using wizards to fight off the Germans. Atrocities are committed on both sides of the channel. Tregillis really drives home the point that war causes people to do evil and suffer the consequences of evil.

Although the Germans have superhum

Great alternate-universe WWII tale wherein Britain gathers a team of wizards who tap into primeval forces to help fend off the Nazis. At the same time, Germany is secretly training a group of fighters with X-Men like abilities to finish off Britain. Highly inventive and captivating--I'd have probably given it another star if the character development had been a bit more even. ...more

Bitter Seeds, by Ian Tregillis, is a science fiction novel set during World War II. It is an alternate history of the war, in which the Nazis have bred or created literal supermen, capable of walking through walls, flying, pyrokinesis, and seeing the future. That last bit—seeing the future—presents some interesting challenges for the characters and for the author. How does one deal with someone who knows the exact outcome of your every action?

The book begins during the Spanish Civil War. The Ger

Dark alternate-history/reality WW2 novel with Nazi super humans and British warlocks. The price of magic is terribly high as is the cost of experimentation (in human lives) to produce a "superman." An interesting explanation of magic. Terrific British-WW2 home-front feel to the book. Gray/fuzzy lines around the "good guys" and "bad guys" and what they will do to further their aims or limit the aims of the enemy. A feeling of truth in the ugly price each side is willing to pay. ...more
