In an upper level high school French class I was given an assignment to translate a French poem into English. Adding another layer to this, I was originally a Spanish language speaker. I remember getting my paper back with a bright red "A" written across the top, but what really stuck with me was what the teacher said to the class when she gave it to me. She said I had done a beautiful job of not just translating the words, but also the essence and cadence of the poem.

This novel won the 2015 Hugo, the first novel written in Chinese and then translated into English to have this honor. It, for all of its minor blemishes, is well worth it. The story is reminiscent of some "Golden Age" science fiction, but the science is modern and as far as I can tell fairly accurate. The minor problems with the story that I see are probably due to the difficulties of translating, not only the words and meanings, but also a very different cultural mind-set.

This book had interesting ideas and plot, and the way that the story interwove the history of the the cultural revolution was unlike other sci-fi I have read, but I found the characters and writing style flat.
I also have a real antipathy for dream sequences or drug trips in books/movies/etc. and it turns out that a surrealistic video game occupies very much the same space for me, so it felt like there was way too much of that in this book. In retrospect it is actually a pretty interesting narrat ...more
