Now, I usually put off reading classics as I can find them quite dull and hard to get my head round at times. As I’m doing A-Level English Literature this is the novel that we have to read. I read this for the first time in Summer 2011 and it was quite hard going even though it took me three days to finish. I must admit, I wasn’t pleased when I was told to read it for Christmas homework but I soon got stuck into it after a while. I’ve always enjoyed the plot so I started to talk myself into it.

I must admit, I wasn’t pleased when I was told to read it for Christmas homework but I soon got stuck into it after a while. I’ve always enjoyed the plot so I started to talk myself into it.

The plot is a classic. It goes from a Cinderella theme with Jane living with her evil “step family” (her aunt and her cousins) and then it turns into Beauty and the Beast when she lives with Mr Rochester at Thornfield. The novel follows Jane’s hardships as she grows up from when she was treated cruelly as a child living with the Reed’s to losing her first and only love and becoming a beggar on the streets. You really feel for Jane the whole way through, you want everything to work out for her. As it’s all told from her point of view, looking back on her life you do get very attached to her and emotional when things don’t go right for her. There’s a few twists in the plot which keeps your attention despite it dragging in parts. With a heart warming ending with all the loose ends tied up to reward you!

Reading it the second time was much easier than the first. Now I knew what was going to happen it helped knowing where I was in the book or where I would have been in the film. Also the language isn’t difficult to understand which is a bonus! Some people think all classics are written how Shakespeare wrote or Jane Austen but this is nothing but a misconception in most cases! Some things are worded differently but it’s still easy to pick up and it’s all worth it in the end.

There isn’t really a bad character or scene in the book. Everything makes sense and everyone is included for a reason. There are some characters and places that you may not like as they harm Jane or they’re not good for her however they all help make her who she is and she grows from that. Some characters even make a reappearance to give further depths to the story.

Many people believe that this is just a girl growing up and falling in love but there is more to it than that. Yes, she grows up and falls in love but you don’t get there without a bumpy ride with twists and turns in the road. It also doesn’t end there either the book is in three parts and at the end of the first two you think you know how it’ll end but you don’t have a full idea until the very last chapter with probably the most famous line in the novel.

If you’re a fan of classics then this is one you should definitely be picking up! Even if you don’t like classics and like a good romance this would be for you too! Just keep at the book, it’ll all be worth it! ...more
