Shelves: fantasy, dystopia, british, 2018

I started the show years ago and never got around to finishing it, so I was happy to pick up the book and know there would still be some mystery in it.

This is my first Neil Gaiman book and while I can’t say I was disappointed in it, it also didn’t blow me away by any means.

I really enjoyed the Above/Under London aspect of the book. His setting is marvelous. My imagination went wild with it and I came up with a sort of “Dark City” vibe to the alternative world of London.

I love Mr. Croup and Mr I started the show years ago and never got around to finishing it, so I was happy to pick up the book and know there would still be some mystery in it.

I love Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandermar; they were hands down my favourite characters. I felt they had the most effort put into their character building and were very well done. I did not always feel the same about the rest of the characters.

I did enjoy the Marquis de Carabas, even if I couldn’t put my finger on him. A slippery one his is for sure.

As far as Richard and Door are concerned, I just didn’t click well with them. Richard was well put together, but then would say or do something to completely throw me off and think, “what? Why? Huh??” And Door just felt too flat to me, I never really cared about her at all.

The minor characters were okay for being minor, but I have to say, I would have preferred more Anaesthesia and less Door.

The story itself was interesting. I definitely felt there were some plot holes and points where I questioned why something mattered or how something worked that seemed off.

For example (and this has a **SPOILER** in it!!!!):

Door and the gang were heading to the Angel Islington to bring it a key. Why did it send Croup and Vandermar to snatch Door and bring it the key and Door? They were already doing that on their own! I literally felt there was no point at all to waste the effort, unless there was a lot more to the story that was skipped over. Did the marquis know Islington was not on their side? Did Islington know that the marquis knew? I just didn’t feel that was explained at all.

There were other points like that in the book that left my scratching my head and, on occasion, rolling my eyes. But overall, I did enjoy this read. ...more

A really good book, thought it took me a bit to get into it. I wish this would of been part of a series because I would really enjoy learning more about this world.
