Well. This was my first successful experiment with DailyLit. For about 2/3s of a year I read small sections of this novel that were emailed to me. I'm not sure it was the greatest way of reading a novel, there were times when I skimmed only to say I had read for the day, and sometimes I was tired, and towards the end I began letting the emails collect in my inbox to read more at a time, but otherwise I'm not sure I would have gotten through this. Finishing Moby Dick feels like I've reached a milestone in my quest to be "well read". It is unabashedly one of the great American novels (some argue the greatest - I'm not one of them) and left us with the indelible character of Captain Ahab. What surprised me while reading it was it's modernity - Melville bounces around between varying types of prose and decides to virtually dump Ishmael as the narrator 1/4 of the way through. I reallly struggled with the writing style of Moby Dick. Actually thought about quiting but perservered. The book is based on a true story of a whale attacking the Essex whale ship. Having read Nathaniel Philbrick's book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex recently, I found that book to be much more enjoyable.
