Zora Neale Hurston was primarily a journalist and folklorist, the latter made manifest by this book just as the former is by her extended interview Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo". I still intend to read her memoir.
As time passes, writers like Hurston gain more acclaim because they took the time to document and record what is easily passed over until it's gone. Folk stories, music, and culture are easily lost as generations pass and change. And while this is a work of fic ...more
