I remember liking it but I have to read it again to review it properly.

When Richard Adams was shopping Watership Down around to publishers, he got a ton of rejections. It was thought younger kids wouldn't like it because it got too sad, and older kids wouldn't because it was about bunnies.
The book eventually found a sizable audience. But I admit, the bunny angle is what kept me from reading it when I was a kid. My loss.
