Despite her Victorian style tight bun, Poppins is clearly making the children's lives magical, fun, and wonderfully weird. I appreciate that Poppins is left as a mysterious figure, who comes and goes as she pleases. She is also very human, and seems to teach the children the way of the world and protect them in the more dangerous situations. There are hints here and there that Mary is capable of being gentle and motherly, so it's up to the reader to decide whether the more abrasive behaviour is ...more

I went into this book thinking I knew what to expect thanks to my childhood favorite movie starring Julie Andrews. And I was completely surprised to find that this Mary Poppins is ill-tempered, priggish, grumpy and very strict. The magical elements are there, and the writing is witty and entertaining, but Mary herself isn't nearly as likable as the movie version. In this case, I actually like the movie better. ...more
