Despite her Victorian style tight bun, Poppins is clearly making the children's lives magical, fun, and wonderfully weird. I appreciate that Poppins is left as a mysterious figure, who comes and goes as she pleases. She is also very human, and seems to teach the children the way of the world and protect them in the more dangerous situations. I went into this book thinking I knew what to expect thanks to my childhood favorite movie starring Julie Andrews. And I was completely surprised to find that this Mary Poppins is ill-tempered, priggish, grumpy and very strict. The magical elements are there, and the writing is witty and entertaining, but Mary herself isn't nearly as likable as the movie version. In this case, I actually like the movie better.

Enjoyed rereading this childhood classic, though the differences between the book and beloved Disney movie really stand out from an adult perspective.

My children and I really enjoyed this one.
