Okay, so I haven't watched The Bridgertons on Netflix yet. I'm not sure I will because of a certain thing Daphne does at the end of both the book and apparently the show that I (and seemingly lots of other people) classify as rape. But knowing how much I loved the book with that exception (and it was a big exception) it did make me want to read the other books in the series. And a GR group I'm in was doing a group read, which I don't usually participate in, but the audiobook was available at the ...more

I started this book because I just needed a light, cute, and romantic book to read. I absolutely loved this book! There is not a lot of depth to it, I guess. It is a pure escapist book, but it was a delight to read. Kate is a strong female lead in this story who balances the right amount of fire and insecurity to make her seem real and understandable. Luckily, the opening chapter of the book explains Anthony's later behaviors, so he doesn't end up being a completely reprehensible character. He m I started this book because I just needed a light, cute, and romantic book to read. I absolutely loved this book! There is not a lot of depth to it, I guess. It is a pure escapist book, but it was a delight to read. Kate is a strong female lead in this story who balances the right amount of fire and insecurity to make her seem real and understandable. Luckily, the opening chapter of the book explains Anthony's later behaviors, so he doesn't end up being a completely reprehensible character. He may be attacking his fears in a completely irrational manner, but at least as a reader I could understand that there was a reason for him being such a complete "Rake" at the beginning of the story. It was a little frustrating to have the third person narration that allowed me as a reader to know the anxiety and concerns of Anthony and then to see his actions toward Kate. He was obviously falling deeply in love with her, but he had no real idea what love was, so he kept telling himself that he was going to exercise discipline so he wouldn't fall into the trap of falling in love. He must have felt as if he was a roaring success at this, but it seems as if the only person who was buying that was Kate. Everyone else in the society could see that the two of them were in love. My absolutely most favorite scene in the entire novel was the scene that took place between Anthony and Kate in the library during the late night thunderstorm. Although there were little things that had happened between them in previous chapters that hinted at their evolving relationship, this scene really began the true depth of their love for one another. Anthony at this point was still working on courting Kate's sister because he believed that she would be the perfect wife to have -- perfect because there was no chance that he would ever fall in love with her. Kate was still pretty actively working to make sure that her sister did not marry Anthony because of his terrible reputation. But in the library as Anthony comforts Kate in a moment of total vulnerability, all of those preconceived notions that they held about each other were thrown out the window. Anthony proves himself to be a man of honor with an overwhelming kindness toward others, and in particular, Kate. There was such a sweetness in this scene, but not too much sweetness. Anthony still had a lot of work to do, and Kate proved to have her own issues as well, but it was enjoyable to see them work together to help one another overcome those difficulties -- especially once they began to really open up to one another and share their insecurities and fears. Communication -- once again that proves to be the key to all good marriages. I can't recommend this book as a deep thought-provoking book, but for an enjoyable, fun, and fast romantic read I have found few better than Julia Quinn. I have enjoyed both Bridgerton books that I have read, and I plan on continuing this series.

2018 Audio Update - One of my very favorite historicals! The audio version was almost as good as reading it. Almost. I still absolutely love the thunderstorm scene. Touching. And the pall-mall scene. Classic. The audio version also contains the second epilogue, which is the very best second epilogue of all of the Bridgerton books. Five stars! I love this story! ...more

This is one of my sister's favorite books. I could take it away from her, only to find her wearing her murderous glare, demanding I get it back (hahahahahaha)

Julia Quinn is one of my favorite authors and this one is a winner for me, it's witty and funny and the Bridgertons are a wonderful bunch of people. Can't help but love them all.
