The Summoning is the first book in the Darkest Powers series by Kelley Armstrong.
I actually really love this book! It was so different than most of the books I had read up to this point. The characters are so great. I love Chloe. Poor kid has been through so much, but she's still going strong. I love Derek and Simon too, but mostly Derek. ;)

Chloe Saunders leads a dream life at A.R. Gurney School of the Arts. She studies film and theater, her passions, and hopes to be a film director some day. She's a bit quiet and her dad is gone about 98% of the time, but other than that life was ok. That is until she decided to dye her hair with red streaks and got her period finally, unfortunately the ghost of a janitor with a melted face chases her through the school building and it takes medication and a stretcher to get her out of there. Random House was kind enough to send me an ARC of this book, the first in the Darkest Powers trilogy. I quote Kelley Armstrong “Darkest Powers is a young adult urban fantasy trilogy. It’s set in the same universe as my Otherworld series, but with entirely new characters.”
I am a fan of all things Kelley Armstrong, and her new foray into the young adult urban fantasy genre is no exception! I flat out loved this book and can’t wait for the next in the trilogy, The Awakening which is scheduled to be ...more

I liked this book a lot! It's very different from most other paranormal novels--there are no vamps, for instance. It's also packed with action and while I could guess some of what would happen, there were also a lot of plot twists. I listened to the audiobook during my commute and the narrator's voice went really well with how I would imagine Chloe speaking, too.

This book was so so. I don't get all the hipe. All this book was is back story & building the plot. For all the back story, ploting and description there was no real grab you to keep you reading in this book. It does make you WANT to read the second one so you find out what is really going on and what happens. I hope the second one gets better.

This book was an easy read. Just when I thought I'd get a little more background about the Lyle House, the doctors & it's inhabitants, it ended. It has drawn me in though, even if the people aren't my favorite supernatural characters. I'm curious to see how Liz takes the news...
