I'm not sure how to rate this book.

On one hand, I love this book. I really enjoyed Aya and Belias, Kaleb and Mallory and Zevi. I enjoyed learning about the Carnival of Souls, The City. Even the Caste system for women vs men and how it all worked was fascinating.

but..it just didn't hold my attention. I found myself with my mind wandering really easily....I actually had to read about Mallory's and Kaleb's first kiss at least twice because I just kept forgetting what I was reading!!!

I wanted to lo

I thought this was a standalone book, and when I got to the final page and the story was unresolved, I was like, WHHHAAAAT!

I want the next book and I want it NOW! *stamps feet on the ground*

I liked Kaleb, Aya, and Mallory very much. I also liked Belias and Zevi a lot. I didn't much like Evelyn and Adam because they were both very manipulative, but there was so much to like about the three main characters and Belias and Zevi. They were all so different and yet interesting in their own way.

The cover was actually more impressive than than the storyline and, after coming from the fantastic "Fallen" series, this novel seemed disappointingly mediocre. There are Daimons living in one world and Witches living in ours and, of course, they are at war with each other. Toss in a few half daimon/half witch characters and a girl who, mistakenly, thinks she's human, and that about sums it up. It was interesting enough to finish, but it never really sucked me in, so I don't think I will be foll ...more

Okay so this one is kind of middle of the road for me.

I absolutely love a lot of things about it, but then I have issues with a lot of things about it.

Since it's #1 in a series, my issues could clear up in part.

I'm curious about what happens next, but the most interesting bits are definitely between those fighting and not Mallory who seemed at first to be the main character. She was probably my least favorite part. (But maybe she'll improve as the story progresses.)

There's a lot packed into th

This book had a hard time keeping my attention. It felt like it dragged on and on.

ah, maybe if I'd know that there is a sequel coming right up, I'd be more interested / invested in this story & characters but this was published in 2012 and 6 years later, there's no news of a sequel so I kinda read, skim, through. It's okay but there wasn't a 'carnival' as I expect the word to mean (ie. circus) so I was also a bit disappointed. Lots of missing people in the end with no answer forthcoming :/ ...more
