Started reading this book at the beginning of this year as the first part from the trilogy challenge. I have heard so much about it and already seen the movie so I had a pretty clear picture of what was going to happen but I was nevertheless curious because I felt like the movie left me with a few questions I needed answers to.

Started reading this book at the beginning of this year as the first part from the trilogy challenge. I have heard so much about it and already seen the movie so I had a pretty clear picture of what was going to happen but I was nevertheless curious because I felt like the movie left me with a few questions I needed answers to.

The book starts with Thomas, our main character, going up somewhere in a metallic box with no other recollection of his past than his name. That somewhere turns out to be a place called “the Glade” which basically is surrounded by tall walls that form a maze. Slowly, Thomas discovers the rules of the Glade and find out that only boys live there and that they are a small society, each member having a well determined role; their purpose is the same, to solve the Maze and escape, but it is a tough job as the Maze is a dangerous and ever changing place. He also tries to befriend some of the boys, but finds out that it’s not as easy as it seems; he has a pretty tense relationship with a boy named Gally, manages to befriend another one named Chuck and also manages to communicate more with the leader of the group, Alby, and another intriguing character called Newt.

A mysterious girl then shows up and triggers a series of events which will (literally) leave you breathless and you will keep wondering where is all this going to lead without being able to guess.

It is curious that not even after finishing this first volume have I found answers for all my questions and I really appreciate this about the series. I think it makes it impossible for the reader not to want to read the sequels and find out what is the big picture.
I loved the characters, the way they were developed and the relationships they managed to build - pretty intense.

Definitely a must-read for dystopia lovers but also for those who think it is time to give a chance to this genre!

This book took me some time to get into. I think it was a combination of stupid vernacular and lack of character development. You want explanations? You won't get them here. The author tries overly hard to keep you as in the dark about what is happening in the Glade as Thomas. Drop me in a place where I have no clue who I am, where I am, or why I am there, and you had better believe I would be demanding answers. Not so with Thomas. He just blindly accepts his fate for the most part, and doesn't ...more

I enjoyed the read- it kept me interested all the way through. I do wish there were more mystery related to the maze itself- that part kind of feel flat, and I absolutely hated the made-up slang. I also was upset and confused about the character Gally- who,by not fault of his own, was stung and had a resulting psychosis. There are frequent references to his being "psycho" and the hate that Thomas felt for him. And there is no explananation for his behavior at the end of the book other than that ...more
