Good Good Good book!
This is the second Weir novel I've picked up (the first being The Martian), and I loved this one so much more than I did The Martian. I went into the book blind, only knowing the barest bones of the story, and I think that worked in my favor. I didn't know what to expect, so I was happy to just go where the plot went.
As a character, I thought Ryland Grace was a wonderfully imperfect person, well rounded and likable. I thought the conceit of him having to remember what happen ...more

Aaaah what a miraculous journey this has been! This book is super dense in scientific information, so you need to be a bit passionate about space travel at least, plus maybe have a basic physics, mathematical, chemistry understanding.
I am in awe and I wish I could have a peak into the Eridian world, plus Earth after 27 years since Hail Mary went on its mission.
A must read, it really keeps one glued to it's pages (with epoxy! :))). ...more

I finished this last night and am still recovering from the book hangover. Such a wonderful book! I loved the heroes - a middle school science teacher and a spider-like alien. Their creativity and friendship made a science-based book into one with incredible heart.

I liked this only slightly better than The Martian but the same problems remain. The few female scientists and characters are weirdly either sexualized or overly cold/harsh.
The plot and pacing is just silly and it is the same “Oh No! problem! Let’s MacGyver it at the last second!” Over and over and over again.
I like realistic science fiction or wild fantasy but this just creeps into too fantastical for me to enjoy it as sci fi and too many attempts to sound scientific and smart for me to enjoy ...more

I didn't love the Martian nearly as much as everyone else did, primarily due to the main character and his relentless and terrible jokes. Unfortunately, the main character of this book seems to share a brain with the MC from the Martian, leading me to believe that he's basically an author stand-in.
I'm just not interested in books without interesting characters, so I DNF'd this book at 30%. ...more
