Wow, even better the second time through! So much happens in this story that it's easy to miss many of the details in the first read. This time I saw the story unfold from a very different perspective as I knew what was ahead of them. It made me really appreciate the talented Suzanne Collins. She created an amazing futuristic dystopian world, then showed it to us from the point-of-view of a seemingly insignificant young lady named Katniss. (Who turns out to be anything but insignificant).

The Hunger Games was another great young adult book that definitely lived up to the hype for me. It was a gripping, suspenseful science fiction story of a dystopian society in which kids between the ages of twelve and eighteen are forced by the government each year to compete in a gladiator type of fight to the death as a way to keep the citizens in line and prevent them from rebelling. There is also the beginnings of a sweet, tender romance between the two main character ...more

I wish I had read these earlier. I had heard everyone talking about how great they were, and I didn't make it a priority. This is the first in an amazing trilogy that is absolutely riveting and well written. This being the first book, it introduces the characters and introduces a post-modern view of life after North America is no longer. Iron fist control, natural resources being fed to the government by the "worker bees" in the districts, each responsible for a different commodity. It is a litt

The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel that takes place in a future where the ruling Capitol City devised a way to punish twelve districts that rebelled against them. Each of the districts must send two of their children (the ages range from 12 to 18) to compete in a gladiator style fight to the death. The children are released in an arena and must battle each other until there is only one winner left alive. The hunger games are televised, and are required viewing throughout the country. When Pri

I have been waiting to read this book ever since I saw the movie a few months ago. This book didn't really disappoint me at all. It was different then most books I have read but still very interesting and kept me wanting to read the next book in the series. Katniss is unsure of many things but she knows she must survive as long as she can (if not win) the Hunger Games to try to make it home to District 12 for her family who is waiting.. What she doesn't expect is to have feelings for the other t

Katniss Everdeen lives in a post-apocalyptic North America called Panem which is ruled by a capitol with 12 districts. Every year 2 tributes from each district are sent to the hunger games in a fight to the death. Katniss volunteers to take her sister Prim's place in the Hunger Games and is sent with Peeta Mellark, the bakers son. The book does a good job of setting up the land and once the games got started I couldn't put the book down. I'm looking forward to reading the next two books in the s

Read it in one setting, couldn't put it down as far as story-telling goes. I didn't give it a 5 though just because it reminded me of too many other plots, like Lord of the Flies, or more specifically, a short story I read a long time ago called "The Most Dangerous Game." Really dark and pretty disturbing for a YA novel, but infinitely better than Twilight. :) Friends are encouraging me to continue the series, so we will see.

I figure, maybe there's something to this trilogy.... Might as well read it so when the twelve year old customers come in, I know what they're talking about...
