It's been about 5 1/2 years since I last set foot into the utterly fascinating and captivating world of the Shadowhunters Chronicles. And with this book, I was reminded of how much I love this world that Clare has created. It's so rich and immersive and one of my favorite fictional worlds to visit.

And this time around, we are in Edwardian era London with an entirely new generation of soon to be heroes. Although they don't know it yet...

And with this book, I was reminded of how much I love this world that Clare has created. It's so rich and immersive and one of my favorite fictional worlds to visit.

I really liked all of the main characters and found them all interesting and well written.
Though. Clare definitely has a bit of a formula by this point for her characters. The brooding bad boy who hides great pain or anguish underneath a carefree exterior. At least one LGBT character who is not Magnus, closeted or no. The whip smart heroine who secretly pines for a boy and only ends up with him after many trials and suffering. The group of teenagers who take on an oft perilous quest to save the world. But doggone if Clare doesn't know how to work that formula to perfection by this point. And it was a delight to catch up with the survivors (and not) of TID and see how they're all faring.

Looking back at TID, one can see how Clare so deftly set things up for TLH and laid some major groundwork for the trilogy. I liked the plot quite a lot and it really drew me in. And much like with her characters, Clare definitely has a bit of a formula for her plots. A love triangle. At least one MCD. A shocking secret. Dark magic. And, of course, a love triangle. But just as with her characters, she knows how to make her formula work and work well by this point. And she has a talent for introducing new elements and brand new characters that help keep things interesting and not so repetitive. Making Tatiana Blackthorne the presumptive big bad of TLH was an intriguing choice and one that ties back flawlessly to TID. Though the introduction of Tessa's demon father as having allied with Tatiana to get revenge on the Herondales for what had happened to her father, husband and later son was unexpected and interesting. And Grace (who is supposedly in love with James) is somehow involved in the dastardly doings and that makes things all the more interesting.

The ending was very good and has me eager to read the next book. Which my library, at the time of this writing, has on order. ...more

It's been a long time since I've been in the Shadowhunter world. It was nice to revisit the world again but trying to place all the older characters took some remembering.

This story centers around James Herondale. The other main characters are Matthew, Cordelia, Lucie, Thomas and Christopher. There are demons that are now running around and hurting shadowhunters. james and the other shadowhunters are trying to figure out how to stop them.
