Hey everyone!Do we need to set up a special shelf for this challenge?
Any thoughts on names?
Fantastical Foodies
Food Truckin'
Read it and Eat!
The Shop on the Corner
Everything Under the Sun
Hey everyone! *waving back*I love... Read it and Eat! Jenny
I don’t know if a special shelf is needed but we need a strategy. Has everyone watched the SS video?
Does anyone want to be 'head chef'? I'm glad to do this if no one else wants to, but would love a counter part if I do. I've played with most of you but maybe a quick intro would be good...
I'm a realtor (2nd career) and love to read when I'm not working. Empty nester with my husband...no pets, no grandchildren...yet, 2 grand dogs.
My two favorite books so far this year...
...I know, I can't believe I hadn't read this already :)
I did have a chance to watch about half of it yesterday, and it was pretty clear. I just would need to slow it down because I learn by doing so I will figure it out.
Tammie, I say go for being head honcho! I think Jenny (not that I'm speaking for her) has a lot already on her shoulders. I wouldn't mind being your counter part but you already know (I think) that I do sometimes get confused. But if no one else wants to I'll help you as long as I have you leading me.I am a retired high school teacher - English and yearbook. Thank GOD I was retired when distance learning began because my students would've been screwed. lol
I have 5 "children" - 2 boys, 3 girls
21 grandchildren - 11 boys, 10 girls
5 great-grandchildren - 3 boys 2 girls
We keep our numbers pretty even. lol
I loved

and author for mystery series Robert Dugoni
I am Just like youVicki...takes me awhile to figure things out. Need to review the qna thread a couple of times. Best I’ve figured out so far is that it’s better to find the words vs doing a spell out...I need cliff notes :)
I've just revised the SS so that we can all 'edit' it. If you want to work with it a bit...add books you plan to start when the challenge begins feel free. Just remember that books for this challenge CANNOT be started until the challenge starts. After than, it's 'read date'.
Vicki wrote: "I’m on my phone so I can’t tell, but doesn’t this start today?"It doesn't start until Saturday, Sept 19 so we have over 2 weeks yet.
We can wait a week but I'm open for chatting...
We need to name our restaurant
We need to think about our approach...do we search for specific words or should be just read an use what we find? Spellout or search? I haven't figured out the advantage to spelling out yet...it seems if we just found our meals that would be easier...but I'm guessing spell-out affords you more of the same meal?? I'm still in the confused zone.
Be looking for books with food realizing there is a cap on the number of time a book can be used based on the length of the book...so longer books with lots of food/drink are good...I think :Z
I need to watch the video and read through the Q&A thread to catch on. I'll plan on doing that this week, and will be happy to help with strategy once I figure it out!
Okay, I watched the video on the SS and read through the Q&A and think I have it. We'll see. I think it would help if we play around a little bit with the SS before the round starts just to make sure we know how to use it.Unless, Tammie, you want to take this on as head chef? I can be a sous chef on the SS if you like.
Jammin Jenny wrote: "Okay, I watched the video on the SS and read through the Q&A and think I have it. We'll see. Should we enter books for a couple of days and then erase them or something like that...we can take your lead on what you think is best, I just finished a book that had probably 20 different foods/drinks mentioned. I imagine most of the books we read have a lot...we’re just not in tune until we need to be.
Note I added the 2 columns to the far right in the books tab to keep track of extras.
Awesome. Yes, I think we should do that. Also, I noticed a couple of "REF" came up when I copied books to the kitchen so I asked in the Q&A for them to look into it.
I’m going to turn in our team name too...don’t want anyone else to have it...we can tweak if needed.
Okay I tested the SS and I think I understand how it works. I don't think it matters really if we do SIO or scavenger hunts. I think it really depends on the book. If you're reading a cozy mystery like Hannah Swensen, there'll be plenty of food and drink in the book. Another book might be less focused on eating and more focused on action or fantasy, like a space adventure. So do whatever feels right!
Jammin Jenny wrote: "Okay I tested the SS and I think I understand how it works. I don't think it matters really if we do SIO or scavenger hunts. I think it really depends on the book. I tried to watch the view and it doesn't come up. Was there anything special you had to do to see the video?
Ann Sicker wrote: "I tried to watch the view and it doesn't come up. Was there anything special you had to do to see the video?"It shows you how to navigate the SS...enter books (multiple pages) and build meals for your restaurant.
Ann Sicker wrote: "I tried to watch the view and it doesn't come up. Was there anything special you had to do to see the video?"I watched it at my desktop...not sure if it would work on a phone...depends on the phone...but having a bigger screen would definitely be helpful.
I tried it on my desktop. I might try my husband's laptop to see if it works on there. I wasn't sure If I had to create an account on loom to be able to see it.
Ann Sicker wrote: "I tried it on my desktop. I might try my husband's laptop to see if it works on there. I wasn't sure If I had to create an account on loom to be able to see it."I didn't...I just watched it
Tammie and Jenny, thank you both for taking the lead positions. Thank goodness for tech savvy people like you two. I didn’t truly peruse it so I need to study it to be sure I understand what I need to do.
I was able to open the SS the other day and watch it without having to do anything special. Will you two mainly control the SS or will each of us do our own? It seemed like a lot of manipulations would be needed but like I said I just watched it but it was rather small and (for me) went a bit too fast.
I'm not sure Vicki...I think Jenny has it figured out. I followed her lead and just entered a test book...Jenny if you can look at what I did please....I don't understand the meal number column????? And if we do word in text for a quiche let's say, do we need to build the quiche? Same for pie...if I find 'pie' in the text, does that become a 'pie' or do I need to build a pie with ingredients?
Personally I would prefer that everyone at least enter to the 'books read' and 'kitchen round 1'. The kitchen is where the justifications need to go. But this is me...we can evolve and do what everyone feels most comfortable with.
Vicki...If you want, do a test...just make stuff up if you like...we'll erase once we get closer. It will help us understand and maybe result in a strategy that works better for us.
You don't have to waste the time if you don't want to...
Hey! Sorry I forgot to pop in. Anyone want to come do my daytime job for me? Real life turned crazy. I’ll catch up on the posts in a little bit. I’m currently scarfing down a sandwich before meetings and such this afternoon. I’m hoping to have time to sit down tonight and get caught up on everything. :)

No problemo...a couple of us are just trying to figure this out in our spare time. I'm off until later this eve...gotta go run errands and stuff :)

I mean I love my job but whew some days I'm like is it 5 yet and I look at it's like 10 am. That is so not 5 pm. I've played with most of you but I'm Anna. I work in a pediatric outpatient clinic and we are just now really starting to get back up to full capacity after a 12 week telehealth adventure and about another 8 week half in person/half telehealth adventure. I'm over 2020 adventures.... I've been with my husband for 15 years since undergrad. We have one dog named Trooper who is a hot mess at times. I love reading and broadening my books. I'm not the biggest fan of sci-fi but I'm slowly getting there. Man I've read so many books this year. Those Olympics had me hopping. Let me go round up a couple favorites.
Was really good.
I second this recommendation!
Finally got around to this one, loved it!
Just a laid back fun book.
I agree on the Olympics...I am taking a week or 2 off from reading except for my team challenges...this week I hit the trifecta and I found a book that worked for all 3 and was less than 200. I should be sufficiently decompressed by the time this challenge ramps up :)
I feel all of you with The Olympics. It was fun but very stressful - playing, scoring, managing, etc. I actually fell off for a while but luckily we have a great team of mods in AMMP and Game Night so they stepped right in and helped out.I agree with Tammie on the SS. At least put the book in the books read, and include in the columns either food/drink items you find in the book, or the various SIO options we have. I'm good with copying/pasting from that sheet to the Kitchen orders and Shop Orders when we get customers.
If you find pie in the text, it would be best to know what kind (cherry, pumpkin, etc.) and put both words in the "food/drink" column on the SS. That way we can decide what type of pie or whatever we want to sell
@Tammie, the Meal Number is just the next number we assign to the meals we are making. Since your book had 4 different food/drink items, we made four meals with that book. I marked them as complete, then updated the Store Order form to show what we can get for those items and who we can sell them to.

Jammin Jenny wrote: "@Tammie, the Meal Number is just the next number we assign to the meals we are making. Since your book had 4 different food/drink items, we made four meals with that book. I marked them as complete..."Thanks Jenny
So is it better to have the book for words in text or spell out...if we have a choice?
I think we can get more orders done with less books if we do scavenger hunts in most books. When we can't come up with the maximum # of items (based on page count) then SIOs make more sense.
I probably going to need the spreadsheet masters to help me with my books. I'm pretty good at scavenger hunting though! I like the idea of more orders and less books.
Me too. I think it will be a really fun challenge. Is everybody comfortable using the SS to enter their books, and all the information on scavenger words or SIO options? If not, I can come up with a completion post template if you'd rather enter it in the thread and have someone else update the SS.
Jammin Jenny wrote: "Me too. I think it will be a really fun challenge. Is everybody comfortable using the SS to enter their books, and all the information on scavenger words or SIO options? If not, I can come up wit..."
I am not exactly sure the strategy of the game yet. Guess I should watch the video again. It sounds like fun and hopefully once it gets going I will understand it a little better.
Also, in this game we can read cookbooks, graphic novels, etc. up from 50-159 pages to create fresh meals which is awesome!Fresh meals (must be used within the month - page count of 50 pages or more. No restriction on using children's, graphic novels, poetry, cookbooks etc.)
We can definitely use scavenger hunt items in those books.
Cool. I think I can figure out the spreadsheet. If I need help then I will just let y'all know. I'm not always the best with spreadsheets. You give me an Epic charting system and I'm golden. You put me in front of excel and sometimes I'm like what the world?! It just make take me a couple times to figure it out but I'll get there. :)
