I've been trying to think of team names... but I'm really bad at it, lol.

All the name suggestions so far are great, but my two favorite are Donut Give Up and Pie and Prejudice

Hi Foxy!

We gotta narrow down a name.

Donut Give Up
Pie and Prejudice

Difficult choice!!

message 14: by Namita (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments Kim is yet to check in.

message 15: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I'm working on finding books to read for the challenge.

It looks like we'll get a bonus for reading the BOM. I really dislike Cassandra Clare, but her book Chain of Gold is the first BOM up for this challenge.

Is anyone else thinking of reading the BOM or finding some good foodish books?

message 16: by Namita (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments I find that Cozy mysteries have lots to do with food, cafes, so that's what I'm going to do. Plus there are a lot of books on Kindle Unlimited for cozy mysteries.

message 17: by Namita (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments Shall we call ourselves Pie and Prejudice? 🙂

Jenn | 209 comments Namita wrote: "I find that Cozy mysteries have lots to do with food, cafes, so that's what I'm going to do. Plus there are a lot of books on Kindle Unlimited for cozy mysteries."

This is exactly what I was planning lol!

I've never done this challenge before either but the Kitchen Prep Area thread explains it a bit more: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

It also gives a good suggestion to write down every character and food item you find in each book.

I think Donut Give Up has more support but we could put it to an official vote. Everyone can comment which one they're voting for, either Donut Give Up or Pie and Prejudice.

Yes, I had to reread the whole thing a couple of times to really get the rules in my head.

If we're voting between the two options I vote Pie and Prejudice.

The rules are pretty extensive. Hopefully, I will get it eventually.

message 26: by Namita (last edited Sep 15, 2020 09:44AM) (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments I was reading the rules and it seems when the Dessert round rolls by we need to read books with 500+ pages.

Guess, prep work is important.

Fresh meals (must be used within the month - page count of 50 pages or more. No restriction on using children's, graphic novels, poetry, cookbooks etc.)

Frozen meals Can be used in the following month. Page count of 160+. No graphic novels, cookbooks, poetry or childrens books unless audio version is more than 5 hours or wordcount can be verified with arbookfind as more than 40,000 words

Desserts, drinks and cocktails ; can be shelved/frozen and used at any point through the challenge. 500+pages. No children's, poetry, graphic novels, plays, cookbooks.

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments Here's the Start Clock

I was looking at the google doc and having thoughts.

- I know we all have editing access but how do we want to enter our books onto the google doc? Do we want a captain/co-captain to be responsible for some of the oversight or do we want to each be responsible for entering our own books?

- I love our team name but it looks like we also need to have a restaurant name & description.

I'm super excited to start by the way.

message 33: by CB (last edited Sep 18, 2020 01:50AM) (new)

CB (cb33) | 404 comments I would think we each enter in our own book information, but just as in the video, maybe a captain/co-captain occasionally reviews and points out when there are errors. Although we should all be reviewing our postings and checking for those errors as well.

message 34: by Namita (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments It seemed that we do this as a team. Entering of the books, making sure if fits. Meaning we have to communicate. Most of us are playing for the first time, I honestly have no clue...it will make more sense as we start reading tomorrow.

What kind of a restaurant are we. A Coffee shop/Bakery??

message 35: by Namita (last edited Sep 18, 2020 04:44PM) (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments So, what is everyone going to start with?

Round 1, we do fresh so...line up those books and happy reading.

I'm starting with A Litter of Bones (DCI Logan Crime Thrillers, #1) by J.D. Kirk .. I have a note book ready where I will write down any food items mentioned.

message 36: by Kim (new)

Kim | 68 comments I tried clicking on the spreadsheet but don’t have access. What should I do?

message 37: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments I love our team name but it looks like we also need to have a restaurant name & description.

I thought our team name was the name of our restaurant?

What kind of a restaurant are we. A Coffee shop/Bakery??

It really doesn't matter what kind of restaurant we are since we'll be serving all sorts of food based on which customers we get

Round 1, we do fresh

Round 1 isn't just fresh. We have to do all the food. If we end up having "teenagers" as customers, they only eat frozen food as well as soda/soft drinks and desserts.

Children ; only eat fish and chips, sandwiches, quiche, juice and water.
Teenagers ; eat all frozen meals, soda/soft drinks and desserts.
Adults ; eat everything. May even give you a tip (which allows you to preserve fresh food for next month)
Pensioners only eat fresh food and pasta

Customers are randomised at the end of the month to eat the team meals.

Kim, message me a gmail address for you and I'll see about adding you to the spreadsheet

message 38: by Namita (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments Thanks Jen. What would we do without you. My first time playing and fumbling along. 😀😀

message 39: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments "we should all be reviewing our postings and checking for those errors"

Yes, definitely. I think once we get in the groove we'll be fine, but communication and check/double check are key.

"I thought our team name was the name of our restaurant?..."

That's perfect, that makes things so much easier. Besides our team name is pretty great.

So, what is everyone going to start with?
I'm starting with The Book of Salt by Monique Truong

Happy reading everyone!

message 40: by Namita (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments Almost done with my second book. First book, I got coffee. I’ve added it to the spreadsheet.

For the 2nd book, I posed a question. I found the words bacon and quiche. Need some clarification. Once I get it, I’ll update the spreadsheet.

Jenn, would you mind looking at the spreadsheet. I think I’ve done it right. Another set of eyes would be good.

Jenn | 209 comments Namita wrote: "Jenn, would you mind looking at the spreadsheet. I think I’ve done it right. Another set of eyes would be good."

It looks right to me so far. Just make sure you're keeping track of names and other foods in the books in case we have to switch things around to get a better variety of food. I don't think we'll need to since it seems like we'll be doing a lot of scavenger items but it's good to be prepared.

message 42: by Kim (new)

Kim | 68 comments Are waiting until we finish our books to put them in the spreadsheet?

Or put them in so we know what each other is planning?

message 43: by CB (last edited Sep 20, 2020 07:23PM) (new)

CB (cb33) | 404 comments Posted my first book - did the scavenger hunt, and completed 2 meals - fish and chips, and tea.

message 44: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments Kim wrote: "Are waiting until we finish our books to put them in the spreadsheet?

It might be easier to put in each book as you start it in order to keep track of how many books we have since we're limited to 80 total books. If the spreadsheet is filling up really fast, then we can also focus on longer books. Desserts and cocktails require 500+ pages.

message 45: by CB (new)

CB (cb33) | 404 comments One question I had, after reviewing the spreadsheet and also watching the video - is the short meal description that we are to write supposed to be a play on the book we read and found the scavenger words in?

message 46: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments CB wrote: "One question I had, after reviewing the spreadsheet and also watching the video - is the short meal description that we are to write supposed to be a play on the book we read and found the scavenge..."

Since we can use multiple books for spell-it-out ingredients to make meals, I don't think it has to be a play on a specific book. It doesn't even count towards points so it seems to be more of a fun thing to add to the game.

message 47: by Jenn (last edited Sep 21, 2020 02:25PM) (new)

Jenn | 209 comments Namita, I saw that you added moonshine, wine, and water to the spreadsheet. The books you have listed though don't meet the minimum page count for those items so we won't be able to use them.

Desserts, drinks and cocktails ; can be shelved/frozen and used at any point through the challenge. 500+pages. No children's, poetry, graphic novels, plays, cookbooks.
◈ Champagne, wine, liqueur, beer (generic term or a specific brand/type)
◈ Chocolate, fruit, marshmallow, ice cream, custard or any dessert (generic term or a specific type, e.g. “tart”)
◈ Water, Juice, soda, soft drinks (generic term or a specific type, for e.g. Lemonade)
Desserts, drinks and cocktails have a minimum of 1 and maximum of 5 items.

You also have blanks on lines 6, 23, and 24.

So, I can't use a book with less than 500 pages for Alcoholic drinks?

Got the answer. Will remove them. That's sad. Oh well!

message 49: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 209 comments If anyone is able to find "vinegar" in a book, we can add it to CB's fish and chips to bump that meal up to 55 points, the highest amount of points possible for a meal.

Also, if I were to create another spreadsheet that we could use to list food items we find, would everyone like that? That way if one person has say "bread and potato" in one book and another person has "salt and lemon" in a different book, we could put those together to make the fish and chips meal. It also makes it so no-one is trying to put together a meal by themselves.

message 50: by Namita (new)

Namita (-namita) | 699 comments Jenn, do you think I could use pine nuts for Pasta? In my book Love Potions....there is pasta, with Alfredo, Parmesan and Pine nuts.

Or should I pose it in the questions thread?
