R.F Kuang's the Poppy War is my favorite book of this year. (At least so far...) It is so many other things, though. It is fantasy genre fiction that is epic in scale and chocked full of historical context that has been drawn from Kuang's research on The Rape of Nanjing. Such a great book. I loved the plot, the world, the Gods and mostly the characters. I most excited to get into the next book. I thought the politics in this book was amazing and of course it had to do with a school that builds soldiers.
Rin was an orphan and was going to be sold to marriage by her foster parents who hated her. She decided to study for the exams to get into a school to train to be a soldier for the war against the Federation.

Can definitely tell this was about WW2. It's a little jarring to read this book and to see the hate from the two countries even if they had another name in the book.
