I just can't.

I admit. I read only about 10 pages, so don't take this review as anything to base your opinion on.

In those 10 pages it became obvious that here we have a girl who isn't very old, but has perfect Western 21st century values, thinking and reasoning, in something that looks like... 19th century China?
She doesn't know anything but her existence as the "war orphan" read serf of a family where she is abused all the time and doesn't have any value or worth, but still she apparently think ...more

How do I even begin to talk about this debut novel written by a 19-year-old on her gap year? About this book that 80% of my friends and favorite authors have all marked down as 5 stars? About a book so loudly hyped for the last 2-3 years that it's never left my radar? That it was grim and absolutely worth your time, but likely not a reread type book?
