I really loved this one! Veronica Speedwell is a one of a kind character. Deanna Raybourn did an amazing job creating both a world and a group of characters that are truly outstanding! This is one that I suspect that I will be recommending over and over again. Solid mystery. Outstanding historical fiction. And the relationship between Mr. Stoker and Veronica is one of my favorites in all of literature! I highly recommend this one! You can't go wrong with this one! ...more

This was a really great story and I loved how smart it was. I also really loved how the story unfolded and the secrets that were revealed. It was a little slow at the middle, and I’m not completely sure the traveling show part was necessary at all except as a plot point for the “fake dating”, but it got really intense near the end.

Veronica Speedwell is certainly a curious young woman. Her name for example... a mystery that is not solved in this story and may never be. Veronica tells the story herself and her tone is quite haughty and very self-assured .. she certainly appears to believe herself superior to almost everyone. Every second page she proclaims herself a cliche: feminist, free-thinker, scientist, pragmatist and yet one cannot help liking her.
