I am getting very squeamish about rape/torture books. This one starts with a gruesome scene, and it is simmering beneath the surface for a large part of the book. Then it hit another trope I dislike -- the super competent protagonist who doesn't get much done. We are told many times that Kendra is super special and incredibly smart, so when we get to the actual mystery I was hoping to see amazing connections and thinking.
