I adore Holly Black and The Darkest Part of the Forest was the perfect, eerie Halloween read! I love all the characters, even the wild, magical forest. The main character, Hazel, and her brother Ben, begin as unsupervised, bare-foot urchins whose fantasy game of Arthurian Knights takes a savage turn when they happen upon a river witch eating the corpse of another local child. Yes, dark stuff. But awesome. Hazel hacks at the creature with her wooden sword, which fails epically, but somehow gains ...more

Holly Black and faeries is (mostly) my jam. Valiant was my least favorite of the Modern Faerie Tales series, but this is kind of what I think Valiant could have/should have been in some ways. Hazel as the knight and her brother Ben as the bard was a great pairing, and how they played at saving the prince together.

My main drawback is that at the beginning things from the past are laid out in a strange and awkward order that was a bit jarring as you had to place it in the timeline while you listen ...more

This was more like 3.5 stars. It was a cute fairytale story; a quick read. I enjoyed that the female didn't need to be rescued and that it was LGBTQ friendly. It was just a bit too cutesy for me. It read more like a young, young adult in my opinion. ...more
