Set in time that our time is ancient history, and humans have colonized the cosmos. Where people are not considered equal and have been divided into a color class system.

Red are slaves lowest and Gold the ruler and highest. Darrow is a red and a helldiver on Mars, trying with the other reds to get the planet ready , terraforming it for humans left on a "dying" Earth to come and live. But little do they realize they are nothing more then slaves.

So this was fan

Wow. That was intense. I need to read the next in the series soon to see how the rest of this goes.

I really enjoyed this book! Found there were a lot of parallels to Hunger Games and other similar books but this was a pretty refreshing take & I enjoyed it. Definitely recommend! Looking forward to reading the second in the trilogy!

I'll try to come back and do a more detailed review!

3 stars for the interesting but slow beginning of the book, 2 stars for the dry prep in the middle, then 4 stars for most of the intense Institute Game. Dystopia isn't my thing, but I've heard great things about this book and someone chose it for me for a challenge. I think I am going to listen to the rest of the books in the series.

This story seemed like The Hunger Games meets Ender's Game. I think the classroom setting and battle room of Ender's Game was more productive to teaching about lead

This was fantastic. It started off a bit slow, and I almost put it down thinking it just wasn't my thing. I'm so glad I didn't. It does have shades of other novels. I saw a lot of Hunger Games, and some Ender's Game as well. So it was fitting that the main character was compared to the two protagonists of those novels on the front cover.

It should bother me that this book borrowed so heavily from other novels, but it doesn't. There were enough differences and originality to keep the story fresh.

Fantastic book to start 2022! Man, this guy can write! Terribly engaging story, full of memorable characters - Darrow, Mustang, Sevro, Roque, Pax...I probably would have given it 5 stars, only I'm personally not as into long descriptive "battle" type scenes and there were a lot of those in here due to the nature of the storyline. However, the characters more than made up for those and I found myself getting attached to quite a few! I am eager to see where Darrow's story takes him. Will for sure ...more

okay...um...okay...this book...yeah... I'm not sure where my feelings on it start and where they end. It was hard to get into. There were chapters I had to trudge through for sure. But the ending (not really the ending because it is a series) but the ending was worth it. The depth of the world and the characters are really what got me. I felt things for sure, but mostly anger and frustration. Not because of the quality of the book but because of the story itself. I wanted justice, but I must be ...more
