YA dystopian future is the hip genre these days. Like all hip genres, it can get a little overwhelming since everyone seems to want to get on the hip bandwagon. Winnowing out the gems can be daunting, but worth it when the reader finds a book like this.

3 stars for the interesting but slow beginning of the book, 2 stars for the dry prep in the middle, then 4 stars for most of the intense Institute Game. Dystopia isn't my thing, but I've heard great things about this book and someone chose it for me for a challenge. I think I am going to listen to the rest of the books in the series.

This story seemed like The Hunger Games meets Ender's Game. I think the classroom setting and battle room of Ender's Game was more productive to teaching about lead

Scifi BookClub Sept 2016 / Audiobook:

I have so many strong, problem opinions about and reactions to this book. I the wave of loving a series like The Expanse, and picking this book for the Scifi BookClub because the second in the series was voted Goodread's Best Scifi for 2015, I expected a lot of this book......and I got absolutely nothing back.

started out listening to the audio and switched to the ebook because it was so confusing with all the caste colors and people. There were parts i really liked, and parts i didn't. There were also a lot of eh parts. Overall i enjoyed it enough to want to read the next book. ...more
