What Members Thought

For those who are not aware, "The Fall of Gondolin" is not a novel. It is a systematic study of various incomplete texts of Prof. Tolkien's intentions and plans for his stories. There is a lot of great back story. It seems he had interesting ideas for Earendil, and for the fate of Two Trees in Valinor. You will recognise how the characters and their names altered. For an example, here Melkor is called "Melko" and the Elves are called "Gnomes".

A very interesting book, if you have read no more tha the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and Silmarillion.
There are the coming of Tuor to Gondolin (same text you find in Unfinished Tales) and the first version of the fall of Gondolin (the one you find in the Book of Lost Tales, part II)
Plus some bits and pieces from the rest of the HoME

The Fall of Gondolin was excellent, a real page-turner. Everything about The Fall of Gondolin was beautifully complex. I was blown away by the author’s ability to write such phenomenal scenes.
The Fall of Gondolin started and ended strong, but the timeline was a bit hazy at points. The story sagged in the middle, leaving the characters without purpose.

It is really hard to write a review when there is so little to criticise, my only regrets are the book is too short, and it is a real pity that the story of Gondolin was not written in full as the sample that ends with the scene of Tuor and Voronwe coming to Gondolin, I loved all the details and dialogue added to the story which is published elsewhere only as a summary. And Tolkien's beautiful, poetic and archaic language, which can be now particularly contrasted with the simplistic vocabulary u
