I just finished a first read of this really interesting and beautifully put together volume with excellent evocative art by Alan Lee. its a very interesting volume in terms of how Christopher Tolkien presents the evolving myth of Beren and Luthien - I need to think more about this (perhaps a paper for Kzoo next year?) but it does present, I think, an interesting model for how to study the major strands of Tolkien's legendarium - also CRRT provides some really insightful new commentary - need to ...more

This book includes story fragments of Tolkien's early editions of Beren and Lúthien. There are mainly two versions of their story. The first version is the much known short version found in The Silmarillion. The second version is an (uncompleted) epic poem. This book also includes plenty of notes and commentary from Prof. Tolkien's son, Christopher Tolkien.

This is a book more suitable for the die hard fans and for people who want insights into the evolution of Tolkien's writings.

This book is a compilation of the chronological versions of the story of Beren and Luthien by JRR Tolkien. There are extensive excerpts from the beautifully written poem the Lay of Luthien.

I first read of this tale from the Silmarillion. But reading this separate and detailed account helped me understand the story better. Having finished this book, I am very interested in reading the Children of Hurin and look forward to the forth-coming Fall of Gondolin!
