This book includes story fragments of Tolkien's early editions of Beren and Lúthien. There are mainly two versions of their story. The first version is the much known short version found in The Silmarillion. The second version is an (uncompleted) epic poem. This book is a compilation of the chronological versions of the story of Beren and Luthien by JRR Tolkien. There are extensive excerpts from the beautifully written poem the Lay of Luthien.
I first read of this tale from the Silmarillion. But reading this separate and detailed account helped me understand the story better. Having finished this book, I am very interested in reading the Children of Hurin and look forward to the forth-coming Fall of Gondolin!
