An interesting conceit behind another "tortured warrior finds soul mate" tale. Linking each man with a demon released from Pandora's box is somewhat clever, but the story doesn't delve deeper into mythology (at least within the first of the trilogy).

Characters also didn't have a great deal of depth, but overall, there was enough conflict and intrigue to keep me interested. I'd like more banter between the Lords so we can get a better feel for their personalities. Perhaps in the next one!

Even if I completely ignore the fact that the Greek mythology on which this one is looooosely based on is butchered beyond belief, and even if the completely uninspired and based-on-nothing way the two main characters fall head over heels for each other from the moment they lay eyes on each other can be tolerated, there was something that made this book a chore for me to read.

I actually don't know what to rate this book and how many star that i have to put. The theme is interesting enough with attractive setting in Budapest (where no romance author ever gone before)...but i just couldn't like GS writing. It is painful to read and it has the look of an amateur writer while i heard so many good things about her. So i'm struggling to read and to finish this book. I oddly somewhat like the book but just couldn't get pass the style of writing.

I read and reviewed this book in December of 2008. It's that old. I am posting my complete and original (non-rewritten) review because when looking back I would like to think that my reviews now are quite a bit different and better then they were over a year ago. Since I wrote this I discoverd that Showalter did write a prequel to the series which was released in ebook format only. She did release that story in a omnibus a few days ago called Into The Dark which I can't wait to read.

Rating is somewhere between a 2 and 3, but since I'm feeling vague and generous tonight, up to a 3 it goes.

PNR used to be my thing, about 10 years ago. Not so much now, but when I spotted this series that's been aging on my giant TBR pile as the pick for the annual read-a-thon over at Series Overload of Series, I thought now's my chance to jump back in to the mix. I've read and liked Gina Showalter in the past before - I believe it was her Alien Huntress series.

3.5 stars. Dark, dangerous romance between a sheltered woman and a possessed warrior. The hype of the series was more than my appreciation of the story. Though later stories might be better because they don't have to set everything up.

Abandoned series:
After 3 books. Just too dark and depressing to get to the HEA.

Likes:
* Ashlyn Darrow is haunted by the voices of previous conversations
* Very beauty and the beast

Apparently I don't remember a lot of what went on the first time I read this.
Now that I was paying attention, this was still a lot of fun to read. As with first books, there's a lot of world building that goes on. But I'm not sure if just I took for granted that I already knew what was going on or I skipped over the fact that there were some explanations missing?
Does anyone know how or why Ashlyn can hear voices? I didn't buy her desperatio ...more
