This review was originally posted at Vampire Book Club.

As a long-time fan of Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series, I can’t believe I’m about to say this. Vlad, the hero of Once Burned, gives Bones a run for his money.

Readers of the Night Huntress series (first book: Halfway to the Grave) have met Vlad — as in the basis for Dracula, but please don’t mention it to him. We’ve seen him flex his master vampire skills — pyrokinesis and mindreading. But he’d never been one to make my knees go all goo

After the last couple of lackluster books about Cat and Bones, I didn't have super high expectations for Vlad and Leila, but they brought back the love for sure. This book reminded me of the first couple Cat and Bones stories in a good way - a lot of snark and chemistry between a strong-headed female and a studly old vampire.

I really enjoyed reading about Leila and Vlad. There are already so many kick-ass heroines out there, but Leila holds her own and I'm already a fan. She's strong, loyal, and

Yum! The cover alone is enough to keep me holding it for hours! I have loved Vald since his introduction in the Night Huntress series. I am so glad he found someone worthy of his company. Leila was electrocuted as a teenager and is now seen as a freak. In fact, she lives with a vampire and travels with a carnival. Her childhood accident makes it difficult for her to have contact with humans. She can read their past and future and oh yeah, zap them into quivering puddles. Vlad and Leila's relatio ...more

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would given some of the mixed reviews. I liked Leila as a narrator. I found her likeable and pragmatic. She seems much less likely to fly off the handle than Cat was in the earlier books. But Leila is no pushover; she does stand up for herself. She just does it more subtly. Vlad is a little too torture happy to be a full blown romance hero for me. But since we don't get his POV it didn't bother me as much as it has in other stories. I always look forward to m ...more

I like that the Layla has a very different power, electrocution and mind reading from an accident. She is a loner because of it. She meets Vlad in interesting circumstances. The book is very fast paced and stippled with some satirical humor. I listened to it in just one sitting. I found reasons to keep listening to it.
