Update: Surprisingly, the second book of this series is really freaking good!

This type of heroine makes it very hard for me to respect her.

I can't take this "Oh he's bad for me but I just can't resist" bullshit anymore. Make up your mind, woman! Say "You can't have me!" all you want but stick to it please. Don't give in at his slightest touch.

Is that too much to ask from a female character nowadays?

Vlad was an intriguing character in previous Night Huntress books. I'm very pleased this layered, tortured man gets his own story (and multiple books to tell that story). I thought Leila was the perfect choice for him. I liked that she had her own abilities (and a difficult past) and was strong; she called bullshit when she needed to. ...more

It's been almost a year now and I still have problems articulating why this book is a 3 stars bag of meh for me.
Do I love Vlad in the Night Huntress books? Yes. He is cunning and cheeky and a pain in the ass for Bones while at the same time a great and loyal friend to Mencheres and Cat.
And Leila is an awesome character. She's strong while at the same time vulnerable. She is smart (thank the gods above and bellow) and quick on her feet and a survivor.

It wasn't Bones & Cat good, but it was pretty close.
I really enjoy Frost's writing, it's just so light and easy to read, always funny, witty and sexy.
We get to see Vlad in a new light here and I loved him as a main character!, Leila is a wonderful choice for Vlad, she's strong and not a pushover at all.
I always liked Vlad whenever he showed up in the Night huntress series and am happy to see he got someone too.
