4.5 *s. I didn't like this one quite as much as the previous in the series. I think because it was more military in focus and I prefer the covert missions, tactics and political machinations to battle descriptions. But in the end it didn't make that big a difference to me. The emotional stakes were also higher in this one as Tavi finds out his heritage and Isana finally comes clean to him. I'm a sucker for a big emotional scene and that one had me re-reading. I don't get it. How can this series keep getting better with every book? How the crap does Butcher do it? It's like everything he writes becomes magic. I don't even have a hard time getting through his books like I do most male authors. This one I read in a day with many Tomb Raider breaks. Compare that to the three, four days it will take me to finish a Simon R. Green book and you know Butcher is doing something right for me.
