Despite the fact that parts of this book were a giant mess, I did end up mostly enjoying it. Thea Harrison is an engaging writer most of the time, and the fast narrative helps hide some world building and character issues. I'll share some of my impressions on specifics below.

The Love Story
The problem here was that in this book, and to a lesser extent the first one, there was no real explanation. Despite the fact that the author has gone to great pains to say that there is a choice about 3.5 stars

Despite the fact that parts of this book were a giant mess, I did end up mostly enjoying it. Thea Harrison is an engaging writer most of the time, and the fast narrative helps hide some world building and character issues. I'll share some of my impressions on specifics below.

The Love Story
The problem here was that in this book, and to a lesser extent the first one, there was no real explanation. Despite the fact that the author has gone to great pains to say that there is a choice about mating, there is no real evidence that this is true. Tiago and Tricks have known each other for hundreds of years, and they have barely spoken. All of a sudden, they are in love. Why? Tiago does learn about her and start to love things about her after they are mated, but the who mating thing does not differ very much from any fated mates book I've read. Despite this, the chemistry between the two leads was written well, and there was a lot of sexual tension.

The Dialogue
At some points the sentinels talk like they stole some pages from a Black Dagger Brotherhood script. Also, Tiago calls Tricks "young lady" in some scenes that felt completely creepy to me.

The World Building
The first novel was, rightly, criticized by some readers for having very generic world building. At some points in the series I wanted to scream "It's Rivendell/ lembas bread/ Knockturn Alley" (or insert other famous fantasy place/ item).

The Ending- The Saving Grace of the Book for Me (Spoilers hidden- don't click if you don't want to know specifics)
The ending saved the book for me, because I was expecting something that would make me hurl the book against the wall. Instead I got something that actually satisfied me. (view spoiler) ...more

After falling in love with Dragon Bound I didn't want to read this one because nothing could live up to that first book. Nothing. And it didn't. Not even close.

I liked Tricks before this book but here she was a bit irritating here. Irritatingly perfect at times. Everyone falls in love with her. And the one person who doesn't is the villain. A villain I identified very early on. I was unhappy to be proved right. I was hoping for it to be someone I'd never considered.

Book 2 in the Elder Races

At the end of book 1 Tricks revealed her true identity, in this book we deal with the aftermath. I liked Tricks in the first book and that continued into this one, she's really quirky which I enjoyed. Tiago on the other hand I wasn't really sure about. I did come to like him but at times I wanted to knock their heads together.

I am looking forward to Rune's book. He has intrigued me since book 1 :) ...more

I guess the best recommendation that I can give this series is that I trust the author enough to keep buying without sampling first. Also, I have been out of the PNR realm for years and these are dragging me back in.
