I've been away from Gertrude Hunt for too long. I loved this book, even though it seemed too long due to its web-serial creation. Dina and Sean host a galactic bride selection contest at the Inn, and things get crazy and wonderful quickly. I loved the antics, the weirdly wonderful galactic species, the complicated politics. I especially loved learning the super-sad back story to long-time Inn resident Caldenia.

And what a glorious ending.

Highly recommended. I want more, please. ...more

I read this one on their website as they released weekly chapters, and really enjoyed it. It was fun going through it all in a block, and then getting the ending.

I love this world and these characters, it always feels like visiting friends. I loved getting insight into Caldenia (view spoiler), and I loved Officer Marais.

The ending was awesome. What does it mean? I need to knoooooow!

Audiobook review

I thought this idea was very clever and hilarious but it felt disjointed to me - the Bachelor style contest and saving Wilmos felt so different! There were so many species and new people in this book that a lot of time I didn't know who was who. When the assassin was discovered, I didn't even know who this person was!!

You have to give it to I&G - they have an amazing imagination. Those killer trees were so funny!! And how they adapted the whole Bachelor contest in a way that mad Audiobook review

You have to give it to I&G - they have an amazing imagination. Those killer trees were so funny!! And how they adapted the whole Bachelor contest in a way that made total sense with this society was simply brilliant!! I also totally loved seeing Sean as an Innkeeper with his robe and everything. I think I'll have to listen to this book again to enjoy all these shenanigans - the narration change distracted me too much to enjoy it properly.

I also had a lot of thoughts about the narration change - this is the THIRD narrator for this series and while she wasn't terrible, she changed some pronunciations which drove me nuts. I understand each narrator wants to do their own thing, but when you become a narrator of a series in the 5TH BOOK with the same characters, you should strive for consistency with prior narrators. Please do your homework!! If a character was super over the top in prior narrations, why would you bring him down? Why change how somebody's name is pronounced? This is very jarring for the listener!

I HATED the summaries at the beginning of each chapter which DOES not go with audiobooks. I understand this is something I&G did for the free serialized version which comes out weekly in their blog (I think). If you're reading this as a serial, a quick summary every week makes sense but NOT if you're listening the book!! As a listener, I don't have the option to ignore those or fast forward them (as you run the risk of missing the beginning of the chapter) and they quickly became very ANNOYING. Please don't do this for the audio version anymore!!!

(Note: I listen to this author only in audio and currently own 26 of their audiobooks which I've bought using full Audible credits so I feel I have the right to complain when we get a subpar listening experience.)

Super excited for the next book specially after the end. I hope it's not so much centered around the Inn as I'm tired of so many descriptions of rooms!

I read about 70% of the free serial before buying the full printed edition and jumping into it. This series will always be a favorite. I very much appreciate the authors sharing the story chapter-by-chapter and releasing a published version with extras because it feels like a reward for reading both and paying for the edited published edition.
