This is not the type of book I normally read; c'mon, look at that cover! So when this book become a monthly read for one of my book groups, I was not very excited. I dithered and read everything else under the sun, but I finally had to buckle down and read it and I'm really glad I did.

Yes, this book is trashy. It has way more romance and sexy times than I normally prefer. The happy ending felt rushed and a bit forced. But, I don't care. I enjoyed the heck out of this book anyway.

The world building was fascinating, with the human race splitting into three distinct groups: humans, shifters, and psys. Human and shifters need no explanation, but the psys have convinced themselves that all emotions are bad and have been able to develop higher mental powers. Sascha, our heroine, thinks she is broken because she feels everything. Of course it takes the love of a good man, Lucas, to convince her that she's perfect. I know you're rolling your eyes right now (I was too), but the overall mystery/plot and world building presented here really do make up for all the mushiness.

Sascha was a strong character and I liked that she stood up for herself and what she felt was right. Lucas was very domineering and "alpha" but it was also easy to see how much he cared for Sascha. I didn't feel like Sascha let Lucas dominate her as much as other reviewers seem to. I think she held her own pretty well and fought for what she believed in. On the other hand, this book did use the "you have no choice, you're my mate" destiny clause, so I can see how some reviewers felt like Sascha had been "trapped" into being with Lucas. Whatever though, it didn't bother me for some reason.

It was easy to see the killer's identity coming, but I enjoyed the build up and the conclusion. I also liked all the side characters Ms. Singh created, especially Tammy. They helped to flesh out the world and really show the differences between the societies. Hopefully we will see more from the humans in future books.

I think I will pick up more books in this series, but I will be sure to order them on my Kindle from now on. The covers, oh my, the covers... ...more
