What Members Thought

Kelly (Maybedog)
While the book is entertaining and enjoyable, the horrible sexism is unbelievable. Just because she acknowledges the sexism and is horrified by it, doesn't mean it's not sexist. It's still sexist if the character then goes ahead and tolerates it because that's just the way the culture is. By tolerate it, I mean let herself be dragged into it again and again, even though she isn't part of it and it hurts her. These men treat her like crap and she mostly lets them. They put her in horrible danger ...more

Welcome to the world of Mercy, ace mechanic and coyote shifter. I picked up Moon Called at the library because I’ve heard of Patricia Brigg’s name bandied around a lot in most of the paranormal groups that I hang around.

Although I leaned more towards PNR, with emphasis on the R for romance, I don’t mind dabbling once in a while with some Urban Fantasy books where Moon Called righteously belongs.

Mercedes Thompson’s world is full of strange creatures. Her next door neighbor is the alpha of the loc

**Original 2009 rating: 3 stars**
**Sept. 2017 rating: 4 stars**

Continuing with the blast-from-the-past, holy-crap-I'm-behind-on-every-series re-read bonanza, I've decided to delve back into Mercy Thompson's world.

Originally, I'd given this three stars. I'm guessing that's partly because the villain's confession didn't sit right with me. It still doesn't, truth be told. The convoluted reasoning fueling everything that happened...it's so much effort for something that could've been handled in muc

4 solid wonderful stars for this first-in-the-series about a coyote shapeshifter VW mechanic and her crazy paranormal world. She property abuts that of the Pack Alpha, her former boss is a gremlin, and her current pet project is a WV van owned by a vampire who loves Scooby Doo. I knew this was going to live up to all of the hype.

And it did. Briggs is solid at urban fantasy, and I was quickly sucked into to Mercy's world. I felt the story dragged a little in the middle, and then the ending too n

One of the first urban fantasy series I ever read and still among the best of the genre.

Complicated characters, engaging plot, well-thought out world and that extra something that makes a book draw you in and make you stay in that world for just a little bit longer.

The overall series continues with Alpha & Omega, and the story of how Charles met Anna.

First read: August 1st 2010 ~ 5 stars
Re-read: March 8th 2014 ~ still 5 stars
Re-read 2: September 20th 2019 ~ 5 stars

I love urban fantasy. I really do. I however, do not love the ones that are the romance variety.

To be fair, this is one that isn't too overtly a romance.

That said, I love the werewolf details. Lots of thought went into the pack and how they operate. The world is very rich and interesting. Again - lots of thought went into this.

I'd love to read more, but am not looking forward to more descriptions of bad boy werewolves and looming love triangles.

Mercedes is exactly the type of female character that I adore. She is strong and she doesn't feel the need to constantly prove it to others. She lives alone but alone doesn't mean that she's lonely. There is some romance there but it's very decently handled so it's not one those books where the action takes the back seat to sex. Actually there is no sex at all.

The most interesting characters? Definitely the Marrok and then the cute werewolf/human gay couple. The description of the pack's reacti

I thought Mercy Thompson was a well-developed character in a believable world of vampires, werewolves and walkers. She's tough, likable, and keeps interesting company. Nice, fast-paced story and a quick read. Very enjoyable! ...more

I loved this book. Mercy Thompson is an excellent heroine. Her strengths are not defined by her mystical powers as a walker but as an adaptable person with special abilities. Raised by werewolves she understands the inner workings of being part of a pack without the bother of actually having to conform and be pack. It is the readers priviledge to get an inside look at Mercy's knowledge of "others" and things that go bump in the night.

This was fun. Mercy is a complicated person...she'll go to church, bake cookies, repair a car's engine and then shoot some bad guys. Oh yeah, and she also happens to be able to turn into a coyote.
This is , as I often say about pure pleausure reads, the literary equivalent of eating potato chips or buttered popcorn. It's meant to be fun and it sure is hard to stop once you get started. Briggs is a talented writer. Her dialogue is snappy and occasionally hilarious.
She also writes vivid, believabl

When Patricia puts out a new book to this series, I reread every single book again before getting to the new book.
So is this my 13th time reading or listening to this series?
I started out reading the paper version, then read on my Nook and now I now listen to it on audiobook.
I'm not tired of the series so far so that should tell you how much I love it!!
I really like the narrator, Lorelei King. The right narrator makes a whole lot of difference!

I don't know how I feel about this book. It was a slow roll reading this, but I found myself coming back to read the next chapter. Well, that and I can't not finish a book.
Everything felt so matter of fact that I didn't feel anything for the characters.

I love Mercedes Thompson! She is strong and capable, but not too stupid to take help when she needs it. The connections between Mercy & Adam and Mercy & Samuel are easy to see, and create a wonderful love triangle that I am eager to see develop.
