E.T.A. Having now read the whole series, I can't say I'd recommend it. I never grew to like Mac, and though the twists were interesting at times the pay-off didn't outweigh the frustration.

Of all the fantasy creatures, the fae interest me the least. The fact that I was able to really enjoy this story moved this book from 3 stars to 4, even though it had a slow beginning and Mac bored the hell out of me with all the description of clothes.

This is a definite stick-with-it series. I like this book well enough, but wasn't overly wowed by it, however the plot itself and world-building where interesting enough that I wanted to read the other 3 Fever books and boy am I glad I did. But I digress. This is book one and we meet Mackayla "Mac" Lane who is an early 20's pretty blonde from the south who turns out to a very powerful fairy seer. She comes to Ireland to find out who murdered her sister who was also a fairy seer. To be quite fran This is a definite stick-with-it series. I like this book well enough, but wasn't overly wowed by it, however the plot itself and world-building where interesting enough that I wanted to read the other 3 Fever books and boy am I glad I did. To be quite frank I couldn't stand Mac in this book, she came across as wimpy, whiny and annoying and I wanted to slap her more than once. And she also gives girls who love pink (like me) a bad name in this book. She makes us all look like a bunch of whiny wimps. You can love pink and have backbone and be brave. Anyway, she gets to Ireland and ends up working in a bookstore called Barrons Books and Baubles owned by a guy named Jericho Barrons. Barrons is in a word, an enigma. He can see the fairies, in spite of the fact that there are not supposed to be male fairy seers and he is also incredibly wealthy and there's no mention of how he got so wealthy either, he seems to be a businessman of some kind. He's also very intelligent. And did I mention seriously hot? He has an accent and has dark skin and is muscular and, I'm digressing again. Barrons was a far more interesting character than Mac, like I said he's an enigma and frankly nearly everything about the man is a big fat question mark. So on the whole for the characters, they weren't my favorite part of this book, but at least on the whole they're pretty interesting. The plot on the other hand is very interesting and was definitly enough to hook me, I enjoyed the world building and Moning's mythology quite a bit. If you didn't like this book, I would advise reading book 2 before you give up on this series entirely. It gets quite a bit better and things really start to pick up and get interesting and Mac does a complete 180 from how she is in this book, she is no longer wimpy, whiny or annoying. But don't skip reading this book, in order to understand and enjoy the rest of the series and to be able to put things in context, book 1 needs to be read. In conclusion, this is a good start to what emerges to be one of the best urban fantasy series on the market today and although it's not perfect and the later books are better, this is worth reading. ...more

I wanted to love this one, I really did, but it looks as though this book and me…well, we just weren't meant to be. The beginning really had me hooked on this plot, but later characterizations had me frowning and questioning where this story was going. Practically all the males are heaping shovelfuls of muscle with carnal desire right below the surface (forget that that's actually the power of one of the characters). I want to start off with the positives since if affected my rating of the book more: First off, the storyline was amazing. It was incredibly interesting and I didn't find a single dull moment. I could picture everything and that is really important to immersing yourself in a book. Honestly, I would read the whole series just to experience the world in these books.

On the other hand I have two major complaints; I didn't like either of the main characters and the way the book was written irritated me. To start off, let me just say that I feel Mac will eventually grow on me but I was expecting a hugely different person when I began reading. I expecting a kick-ass chick who'd be witty and humorous (yeah, yeah ie any heroine from other urban fantasy books). Mac... isn't really any of these things. Things meant to be funny just seemed whiny. I'm completely okay with her incompetence, I think it's fun to see her grow but even at the end of the book she's willing to give up. Next up, Barrons. What an asshole! I don't get anyone's attraction to him at this point. Okay, so he was marginally likable by the end of the book but I can't forget all of the nasty things he's done leading up to that. Am I just spoiled because I've read so many books that have insanely amazing male leads? I'm not asking for perfection, I'd just like one or two redeeming qualities. And now for the styling of the book: I don't like having the narrator spoil the end of the book for me or really any other parts of the books. Mac was constantly telling us "I didn't know it then but..." and fill in some major plot point there that ruins a scene several chapters later.

All that said, I did enjoy the book. It didn't live up to my expectations but I will continue reading the series because it is still worth it. I hope Mac and Barrons at least become less of a problem for me, I really want to like them. ...more

Just underwhelming. I'm glad I listened to the story, because reading this would've been worse. The unfamiliar Irish terms were difficult to remember. Mac Layne was so irritating. She worried about breaking her manicured nails while she was fighting for her life. *Argh* I like sassy dialogue, and I didn't feel it in this book.

This was supposed to be a great paranormal romance, but that didn't happen in this book unless you count (view spoiler) ...more

This was really good! I'm glad I finished reading her Highlander series because some of the people in those books are mentioned in this book.
