Wow! I didn't think they could top the villain from the first book, but they managed. This story keeps getting better and I've finally decided I like Mad Connor Rogan (it was up in the air after the first book).

Nevada and her family are great. She decided to help a man find out who killed his wife when the family that employed her refuses, even though she knows it will be very dangerous. This leads her to working with Augustine and Connor again as well as her new client. They learn more about t ...more

A wise man once said, "A human mind is the place where emotion and reason are locked in perpetual combat. Sadly for our species, emotion always wins."

I'm not sure that I even have words for this book. The duo of Gordon and Ilona write some of the most spectacular books I've ever read. This is no exception.

Nevada takes on a case in which four attorneys are murdered. One is the wife of Cornelius Harrison. He approaches Nevada with his 4 year old daughter, Matilda in tow and a massive Doberman name A wise man once said, "A human mind is the place where emotion and reason are locked in perpetual combat. I'm not sure that I even have words for this book. The duo of Gordon and Ilona write some of the most spectacular books I've ever read. This is no exception.

Nevada takes on a case in which four attorneys are murdered. One is the wife of Cornelius Harrison. He approaches Nevada with his 4 year old daughter, Matilda in tow and a massive Doberman named Bunny. Nevada is confused that a member of House Harrison would need her help until she learns that the murders are being swept aside. She and Cornelius make a deal that Nevada will find the murderer and he will take care of it from there.

We continue to see the strife between the Houses as they try to flatten Houston and begin anew. The magic that erupts is amazing!

Enter Connor "Mad" Rogan. What can I say? I am extremely happy that he was more "Connor" in this book in his singlehanded approach to win over Nevada. He still does some stupid stuff that you know will piss her off but for the most part works with her. Their chemistry is fantastic! Connor has just landed firmly in book boyfriend land.

We learn so much more about Nevada's family in this book. Her sisters have mad skills that were not previously talked about. You gotta love a grandmother that plays with tanks! Every battle I think that nothing worse can happen until it does.

As an animal mage, Cornelius has some super sneaky ways to get past security. This was possibly one of my favorite things. His daughter Matilda is precious. I love the way Connor seems to melt around her. The cat scene with Matilda made me sigh.

Nevada finally lets down her guard enough to let Connor into her life and it is explosive. All I can say is wow! Separately they are forces to be reckoned with. Together they are formidable.

I am trying so hard not to write any spoilers. I can't wait to see where the next book takes us as we have learned some very important things about Nevada and her father's family. It is going to be a rollercoaster.

Ugh, stupid kindle marked it as read before I rated or wrote a review. Anyway, it's Ilona Andrews, they haven't let me down yet and continue to bring it here. Loved Nevada and her family, the complex world and magic systems and I enjoyed Mad Rogan more here as well. Plus, ferret heist! (and to quote Rogan, "technically, it was 2 ferrets and a ferret-badger). If ferret heist doesn't entice, then I'm not sure what else to say. ...more
