Ilona & Gordon could make a cornflake packet interesting reading, so, the world of Nevada Baylor is a piece of cake for them. That's not to say they didn't work hard creating this world & this story cause I'm sure they did, but it seems so effortless in the reading of it. This is what urban fantasy should be!

Best magical dragon tale (without an actual dragon) ever!

Where to start? Although I have read some very good books this year, White Hot eclipses them all, like a supernova that makes all the stars around it appear pale in comparison (well, maybe with the exception of Sarah J. Maas' A Court of Wings and Ruin).

When two and a half years ago Burn For Me, the first book in the Hidden Legacy series, came out, I was Immediately hooked since I felt this was one of the best first books in a series ever. Best magical dragon tale (without an actual dragon) ever!

Where to start? Although I have read some very good books this year, White Hot eclipses them all, like a supernova that makes all the stars around it appear pale in comparison (well, maybe with the exception of Sarah J. Maas' A Court of Wings and Ruin).

When two and a half years ago Burn For Me, the first book in the Hidden Legacy series, came out, I was Immediately hooked since I felt this was one of the best first books in a series ever. So if you haven't read it already, you absolutely have to start there as this is a progressive series (Ilona eloquently explains the difference between an episodic and a progressive series on her blog). There is not only an overarching story arc, but the plot also takes up threads that were spun throughout the first installment and we see the main protagonists evolve and grow. Secondary characters that were introduced and played a peripheral role make another appearance and take on a more central role. We learn more about Rogan and his past and how he got to be called Mad Rogan. We get to observe the family dynamic between the Baylors and we see how Nevada grapples with learning her magic (and getting a handle on her infatuation with Rogan). The chemistry between Nevada and Connor is off the charts, but it is not only physical attraction that binds them but also an emotional connection that grows deeper as once again they are thrown together trying to solve a case they are both involved in. Nevada sees beyond his icy control, and has a hard time fighting her attraction to him, although she continues to resist him as she doesn't want to be a just a passing diversion, somebody he has an affair with and then discards.

I love both the heroine and the hero in this one: Nevada is strong, capable and she can kick serious ass when the situation warrants it. She is also responsible, caring, independent and has a set of values she strictly adheres to; you know she is somebody who will always (try to) do the right thing. Rogan starts out as a very ambiguous character; we don't know for sure if he holds himself to any ethical standards or if he is a sociopath who has decided to indulge Nevada because he is smitten with her. As more and more about his past is revealed, it becomes clear that his feelings run deep and true, but he had to learn the hard way to keep them in check behind a facade of icy power. In the end he is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for Nevada, but of course she doesn't let him. I loved seeing how their relationship developed and especially how Nevada doesn't let herself get steamrollered by the force that is Rogan, though she finally experiences what it means to make love to a tactile and it is spectacular...

It's difficult to classify this novel; partly it is UF, set in Houston and the landscape plays an important role throughout the story. It is also part classic sleuthing story and the detection propels the story forward, while some of the mystery still remains shrouded in the dark. It is also a great and epic romance, with a believable progression in the relationship. And although Nevada and Rogan are the main protagonists there is a whole bunch of secondary characters that not only play an important role but whom we come to care about. And it is part social criticism, raising questions about the validity of sending young men and women off to wars in faraway countries and what it means for the survivors to return to civilian life. It is a critical commentary on the state of government, whether there should be a true democracy where the sovereignity lies with the people, all the people, and not only with the most powerful, those who are rich or or important thanks to their connections to important (magical) families, propounding an oligarchic type of rule . At his point the story seems to hover somewhere between a utopian and dystopian vision of society and I can't wait to see where it will go in Wildfire.
