BORN IN BLOOD started out very promising to me. I’m not really sure why, the vibe of the story had an X-Men feel to me (even though it’s actually necromancers right now). But people with powers or supernaturals are considered freaks in the world that Ms. Ivy constructed, and they live for the most part in a compound away from humans. And they don’t mix aside from the occasional time they work together.

Why I read this book: I needed one with "blood" in the title for a challenge. This one was available in Overdrive. I didn't have super high expectations and the story surprised me in a good way.

Duncan lives in the normal world as a cop. Callie is a diviner living with High Bloods in Valhalla; she can see into the mind of the recently deceased and relive their final moments, making her a good person to work with when solving crimes. When I decided to read Born in Blood, I wasn't very open to new series. But, I had been dying to try a novel by Alexandra Ivy since I met her at AAD a few years ago. I still plan on trying her Guardians of Eternity series, but since this is Book 1 of a new series, I felt more inclined to give it a shot first.

It took a while for this one to get going for me but it could be because I had a hellish business trip with no time for myself in the middle of it. There's no way it would have taken me 9 days to read this book had I been in my normal life. There was good world building, I'm really interested in the tension between the High Bloods and the humans (or the freaks and the norms) and the different types of High Bloods.
