Hmm. This one's tough to rate.

Liked: Very creative idea, including photographs as part of the book. Especially when I learned that the photos are actual, found photos, not made to accompany the book. Wonder which came first: seeing the photos and building the story around them or creating a story and hunting through a bunch of weird pictures until suitable ones turned up. This was 3-3.5 stars for me.

I went into this book having not read the blurb and I didn't really know what to expect. The prologue was intriguing and, for the most part, I enjoyed the book. A lot of the plot twists were fairly predictable, but it wasn't terrible for a YA book. The writing was mostly fine, though a bit flowery for a 16 year old male narrator.

Some of the mythology was interesting, though I'm not sure about the casual use of Welsh, or British terms in general ( This was 3-3.5 stars for me.

Some of the mythology was interesting, though I'm not sure about the casual use of Welsh, or British terms in general (noticeable: 'here, here', and 'take a piss' (not 'take the piss')). I thought the time loops were interesting, but I'm not sure how the Bird and the children managed to experience and remember every day, but not get older, and what the ymbrynes needed to do to reset the loop (or what actually happened when the baddies tried to become immortal). The soporific effect of the time loop wasn't explained either. Also, it seemed much easier to travel back in time than forward (though I guess that each entrance would always go to their particular day, regardless of whether that day was ahead or back in time from the time the person entered).

Jacob was...OK. He wasn't particularly charming or offensive to me. The relationship with Emma was really quite creepy (she's your grandfather's girlfriend!), though I liked her in the end. Most of the peculiar children were OK, if not fleshed out very well (I really liked Bronwyn for some reason).

The baddies were pretty creepy in the end. I thought that part was quite well done, even though the origin and development into wights was a bit sketchy.

I thought the concept of using real photographs was really cool, but the execution of it didn't quite work. Yes, the pictures were creepy, but they had only just been described in great detail. I think it would have been better to show them first and then discuss them.

Finally, I was really hoping for a satisfactory ending. I didn't know it would be setting up for a sequel, and I was very disappointed. I'm not sure I want to read about Jacob and his team of old but young supers on another adventure. ...more

Very creative original book. It reminds me so much of a book I read in middle school called Sender Unknown. In the beginning I was a little freaked out I must admit ( I mean cmon the pictures were quite creepy) After the big part in the story is revealed, I calmed down as was able to enjoy the adventure in this book.
