I love Nalini Singh! I totally love her Psy-Changeling books! So why such a bland rating on this one? It has the very creative and inventive world-building that I've come to expect from Ms. Singh, but I just couldn't feel anything for the main characters. And though I have absolutely no problem enjoying books about vampires & shapeshifter & humans with PNR abilities & magic in general, I just couldn't get my mind to suspend all disbelief enough to enjoy the world created here: Angels live openly ...more

Although this book should actually be rated a 4.75, I'm giving it 5 stars just because I am SO happy to - finally - read such a unique book in my fav genre of PNR. This new Guild Hunters series is action-packed but with just enough love (and sex!!!, altho none was gratitous)to heat things up; I think it should be made into a movie right now! Ms. Singh's world building is strong enough, enticing enough, that I believe this series will be a long-running hit.

Guild Hunters are humans with special powers to help them track down rogue vamps. Note I said "track down"; these guys are the bounty hunters who bring the bad guys in, maybe a bit worse for wear. They are not killers but they are tough enough fighters to stand up to a crazed vampire. The awe-factor comes from the angels and archangels as they fly around the city. High-rise apartment buildings with wall-to-wall windows serve as moving art frames to the beautifully-winged creatures flying about, mostly converging on Archangel Tower where the Archangel Raphael lives and works. Descriptions of jaded New Yorkers walking past needy people, hurt people, contrasts vividly with the vision of them stopping in their tracks to watch Raphael's gold-tipped white wings soaring or more often, Illium's blue feathers shedding good luck and magic. But these awesome creatures are just that, top of the food chain creatures. They were never human, and the older they get, the less they remember the benefits of humanity and individualism. And when they get really old, thats when trouble starts. Raphael "hires" (not really her choice)GH Elena to track down a rogue archangel named Uram whose age has changed him into a crazed killing machine that makes vamps look tame; he has become blood-borne.

I immediately noted the similarities of the original Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter books. Anita was stronger than her co-workers, as is Elena, but it ends there: Elena loves strongly and is loved strongly in return. She has issues (who doesn't?) but she jumps into the fire anyway. She's a little bit of a prude like Anita, too. Raphael is much like Jean-Claude; he's older and stronger than almost anyone else, but he is fair and his "servants" choose to follow him and protect him. Neither are human, but both are the sexiest creatures on earth. Nalini's earth. I just wish they were on my earth!

If this book is on your to-read list, I suggest you move it right to the top as soon as you can! Enjoy!

I absolutely loved this book from page one. Raphael is to die for and Elena is so kick-ass. This is a great book and is definitely a romance. The ending had me crying. Excellent beginning to an amazing series!
