★★★★★ and a Wow! Just loved this book, and I’m not big into shapeshifter books. Sure, there are flaws, but they are beautiful too. Bought the audiobook so I could do a re-read via my ears right after reading with my eyes. I haven't read the same book back-to-back in forever. This would be my very first Nalini Singh book and honestly, it's surprising that I even waited this long to read her. I like her style. But I did think the psy-changeling premise was a little...lame. Then again, I always feel a little absurd reading about a hero that becomes a cat or some type of animal (other than werewolves, I accept them wholeheartedly). Somehow, that did nothing to take away from my enjoyment of this book.

Sacha is a Psy whose powers are weak and unlike the rest of her kind, This would be my very first Nalini Singh book and honestly, it's surprising that I even waited this long to read her. I like her style. But I did think the psy-changeling premise was a little...lame. Then again, I always feel a little absurd reading about a hero that becomes a cat or some type of animal (other than werewolves, I accept them wholeheartedly). Somehow, that did nothing to take away from my enjoyment of this book.

Sacha is a Psy whose powers are weak and unlike the rest of her kind, she feels emotion, basically considered a dysfunction. So for most of the time, she has terrible self-esteem, while actually being likable because she has her unwanted human characteristics. Lucus is a changeling, a black panther, I think, who has initiated relations with the Psy to find a Psy serial killer. But Sacha is a distraction whose connection with the PsyNet may or may not help him get closer to the killer before he kills the next victim. Their attraction is instantaneous, as all non-human entities often feel and have dream sequences to supplement their growth in intimacy. Despite finding a connection with Lucus, Sacha exists in this hopeless controlled mess, thinking that her emotions are a sign of her mental breakdown. So, after learning about a Psy killer, she tries to martyr herself for a good cause - basically go out with a bang.

I like martyr characters like Sacha. I like how she thinks that she must sacrifice herself for the survival of her new family. Paired with her general fear of a mental breakdown, it all fits. While this is a PNR, Sacha remains somewhat powerful and independent in her own right. Lucus is the perfect alpha male. He's protective and fierce, but he gives Sacha space which makes me love him. He is near blind in his belief of saving Sacha and I couldn't help it, it's irresistible. (and i don't generally even like alpha heroes)

There are many secondary characters, obviously prepping for their own HEA. All of them seem to be Sentinels under Lucus, I believe, but unlike the BDB or Lords of the Underworld, there's not much humor or brotherhood in the mix. Well, what I was searching for is the amusing relationships between the characters and there was a serious lack of that.

This whole psy-changeling universe occurs in the alternative dimension slash future world - which is strange and kinda weird, I must admit. But unlike most shifter premises, I felt like it was more like reading an Interracial romance in a crazy different dimension.

The end's killer resolution was weird, because I didn't really understand his motive or anything really. But, again, it did not detract me from loving this book. Sacha and Lucus were great. NS did a great job developing Sacha's character, especially, and creating Lucus as the perfect alpha hero for me. I would recommend this to anyone interested in PNR, but especially to those who crave an unique (or at least, seldom used) female character type. ...more

Singh does a fantastic job of creating her world and drawing you into it. The futuristic world of changlings (better known as "were" peoples) and psy (those with esp abilities) that Singh has created flows so well, I could not find a single flaw in her world building. (Something some paranormal authors have a problem doing.)

Sascha, the heroine, is Psy- a race of humans who years back decided the Vulcans had it right (hee- I couldn't resist) and eliminated all emotions from their psyches.

I'm surprised that so many people liked this one. I was looking at the ratings and this seemed to be loved by many. This is my second novel that I've read by Nalini Singh and it won't be my last. I just really couldn't connect with this book.

Ok, after much thought here's my review:

The Psy feel nothing because of a program called Silence which was instituted in order to eradicate violence. However, changeling women are being brutally murdered by a Psy, so Lucas Hunter attempts to infiltrate the "Psy Net" through Sascha Duncan and in the process discov This is a difficult book to review. Ok, after much thought here's my review:

Nalini Singh has created a world where there are three races; the Psy, the changelines, and the human race. However, changeling women are being brutally murdered by a Psy, so Lucas Hunter attempts to infiltrate the "Psy Net" through Sascha Duncan and in the process discovers some interesting anomalies about her and her world.

This is still difficult for me to review mainly because I didn't get terribly excited about this book, though a few parts of it were exciting. I think the reason is that the world created in this book is a little difficult for me to follow all of the time. I really had to use my brain to follow what was going on and process all of the new words and new concepts that were introduced in this book. That being said, I did find that I loved the world Nalini Singh built and I found myself wanting to reach for the book to go back into the world. So A+ for that even if its hard to grasp at times. I also found that I was drawn to certain characters and wanted to read their stories ASAP, one being Hawke and come to find out his book is freakin #10! The other changeling I was interested in was Dorian.

I found the second half of the book to be much more interesting to me than the first and this is probably in large part due to the fact that I was just better used to the language and the world created. I am intrigued enough to check out the next two books, and after that we'll take it book by book and see.

I wasn't wild about Lucas, and I'm not sure what exactly it was that turned me off to him. I was a little off put by his calling Sascha darling from the get go...darling is a weird endearment for me. I love it, but it just doesn't fit everyone. I did like his panther possessive side....I would have maybe liked to see more of that. The other thing that was a disappointment for me was the fact that the 'bad guy' was who I picked from the beginning. I would have preferred to have been surprised by that.

In the end, it wasn't the best debut to a series I've read but it's good enough to catch my interest in the world that was built and to find out the outcome of some of the characters. ...more
