Another great Dresden adventure. After the cliff hanger of the last book, I was anxious to get back to Harry. However, I delayed getting into this one because I enjoy my Dresden books on audio - as I think James Marsters does a masterful job at narrating our hero - and apparently Mr. Marsters was unable to do this installment due to scheduling conflicts. So rereading this book was good fro me too. I think I devoured this so quickly and was so frustrated by the narrator that I missed things. This time I looked at it as, just the voice of Harry's body-less spirit so it sounds and reacts and perceives different. And rereading my review I did enjoy it more when I wasn't fixated on the narrator. I do want to know who is whispering in Dresdan's ear and if that is important.

I had a real tough time with this book, but only because I'm an audio book listener and after 12 books and a lot of short stories there was a new narrator. James Marsters, who most people know as Spike from the tv series Buffy had a last minute personal conflict and had to back out because he wasn't going to be able to finish it so it could be released at the same time as the hardcover. He was replaced by John Glover, from countless things including Lionel Luther from Smallville. John Glover I believe is a great narrator, but he is not Harry Dresdan. He just missed some of the finer nuances and there was a sort of distance in his narration. What I mean is that it was a lot like he was reading a book to me or maybe telling me something that happened once upon a time. James Marsters is a more in the moment kind of feel. It was bad because after waiting to get my hands on this book for a little over a month, I popped it in and the voice was all wrong. I immediately search and found the answer to why my Harry Dresden was different. Like a legion of fans, I'm really glad I didn't pay for this book and I hope they do a re-recording.

Now, about the actual book. Well, we all know how the last book ended so I was curious to see how he got out of that. I was worried there would be some kind of cop-out. Harry instead still has to fight the good fight, he just has a new set of restrictions. Plus we got to see almost all of our favorites. The only noticeably absent character was Thomas, although we did get a quick scene with him at the end. Harry is fighting a battle to literally save his soul and there is a few excellent twists at the end. A great book, hampered by the narration. I may try to pick up this book again later to see if I feel differently when I'm not constantly thinking about the reader. ...more
