I read this book years ago based upon a recommendation card in a local independent bookstore. I really enjoyed it! I loved the novelty of it taking place in a castle in the 20th century, and also love the way the author strips the romance of living in a "castle" bare with descriptions of the family's poverty. I remember distinctly that the part of the book that really spoke to me about how poor they were--when the girls were so excited to have an egg during teatime! I liked the women in this boo ...more
