Non so quante volte ho iniziato questo commento senza mai riuscire a scrivere qualcosa di decente. Di Elizabeth Gaskell ho già letto l'anno scorso Cranford, che mi ha lasciato con una gran voglia di approfondire. Purtroppo (o per fortuna) i libri che richiamano la mia attenzione (a volte imperiosamente) sono talmente tanti che solo questo gennaio sono riuscita a tornare alla Gaskell. This is a good story of a time long ago, and yet, not so very different from things we're seeing now. Factory owners who won't consider the needs of their workers, and workers who strike for more wages and better conditions, and the fight goes on. Margaret seems to live a very difficult life, yet she is overall gracious and good-hearted. Several possible romances begin to bloom and are nipped off. Actual Rating: 4.5 Stars.
I have read several other reviews where they compare North and South to Pride and Prejudice and I didn't really see it - until I started reading more of it and into it. N&S really is an industrial version of P&P.
Throughout the book I kept comparing it to the BBC TV series, which I wtched before I read it to get a feel and a visual of the story, and I discovered they introduced a couple scenes and took out others. For example, Margaret and Mr Thornton don't meet as h ...more
